Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, situated in the northern part of the North Island. The population of Auckland exceeds 1 million and is supported by an extensive land, sea and air transport network. Auckland is the gateway to southern pacific destinations and can also be considered as the commercial capital of New Zealand. It supports a number of electrical, electronic, communication, control, manufacturing and information technology industries.
While the IET members in the Auckland region enjoy all the benefits and privileges offered by the IET world wide, the Auckland Local Network caters particularly for the needs of the members in the area from Lake Taupo north.
Prime Aims & Objectives of the IET Auckland Local Network are to:
- Further the strategies , direction and objectives of the IET within the Local Network area.
- Assist the members of the Local Network to meet their professional objectives, increase membership and enhance the profile of the IET.
- Undertake activities and functions that its members or the Local Network committee consider should be carried out to further members' interests.
- Liaise with the IET New Zealand forum on matters which the New Zealand Local Networks consider should be carried out at a national or international level, including any national representation and joint initiatives, prestige awards, international lecture tours and other similar activities.
History of Auckland Local Network
The Auckland Sub Centre was officially formed on 28 August 1997 under the control of the New Zealand Centre. The Younger Members Section was established with the formation of a committee on 8 June 2000. The Auckland Sub Centre was later replaced by the Auckland Branch (with direct accountability to IEE Headquarters in the UK) on 1 October 2000.
In order to reduce the duplication of effort and increase the effective use of IEE resources, the IEE Auckland Branch developed a close working relationship with the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) in organizing a joint technical programme.
A Hamilton presence was established in 2004 with the appointment of a Hamilton Corresponding Member to the Auckland Branch Committee and the first combined IEE/ESR event to be repeated in Hamilton. It followed the successful presentation of the Prestige Lecture in Hamilton in previous years and the recent introduction of an IEE Prize for Masters degree graduates in Electronic Engineering at Waikato University.
In April 2006 the Auckland Local Network of the Institution of Engineering & Technology was formed by merging the previous membership of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Institution of Indentured Engineers (IIE) giving it a membership of over 400. The local committee of the IEE continued with the addition of an ex-IIE member to provide continuity.
