    Synopsis – Communications and multimedia industry in Malaysia – It’s status and opportunity :

    This industry covers the converging sectors of telecommunications, broadcasting and internet generating a revenue of RM10 billion (2000) to 40billon (2009).   It is a key determinant towards effectively transforming Malaysian society in achieving national goals of global competitiveness and uplifting of the quality of life of its citizen.  

    With a penetration rate of household broadband at 31.7% and fixed telephone of 43.8%, and cellular subscription at 106.3% of population it has established itself as a network for sustained knowledge delivery and creation in support of corporate and individual learning and innovation enabling the leap forward in socio-economic growth to a high income nation.    

    Topics covered in the talk will be an overview of the status of the industry, technologies and applications and the opportunities offered.


    About the speaker – Mr Toh Swee Hoe

    Toh Swee Hoe is currently the Senior Director of the Research and Planning Division of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.  In this capacity, he oversees spectrum planning and research, market research and statistical research, as well as knowledge management initiatives. 

    Before taking up this present post, he has clocked up thirty four (34) years of experience in various capacities both as a regulator of the communications and multimedia industry and a service provider (Telecoms Department)  in the communications and multimedia industry.

    He is an engineer by profession and holds a Diploma in Electronic Communications (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia), B.Sc (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Portsmouth, England and an M. Sc. in Digital Systems from Heriot Watt University, Scotland.

    Synopsis – Wireless broadband access – An overview of multiple access techniques

    The talk will provide an overview of the multiple access techniques adopted in some of the current and upcoming wireless broadband access standards namely IEEE802.11, IEEE802.16, HSPA, LTE, etc. Focus will given to the working principle of such techniques and how they are to be integrated with IP protocol for quality of service (QoS) support in the networks. 

    Comparisons will also be made among the techniques adopted in the standards and their strengths and weaknesses will be presented. A brief overview of the likely future trends in the development of multiple access techniques in wireless broadband access standards will also be presented. 


    About the speaker – Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei

    Prof. Dr. Lee Sze Wei was born in Malaysia in 1970. He obtained Beng (Hons) in Electronics and Optoelectronics, MPhil., and PhD from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, UK in 1995, 1996, and 1998 respectively. 

    He was in Multimedia University, from 1999 to 2008 before joining Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Oct 2008. He is currently the Vice President (Research, Development and Commercialisation) and the Director of Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research of UTAR. 

    He specializes in telecommunication engineering. He has been involved in various industry-university collaborative research projects and providing training programmes to the industry aimed at updating and upgrading the knowledge and skill of technologists and engineers in the industry.
