Queensland National Guidelines

1. IET Australia

IET Australia shall exist to undertake the practices and activities as specified by the member Branches from time to time. The local networks within the geographical area of Australia shall be member branches of IET Australia.

The names of the founding local networks and the areas served shall be as follows:

2. Aims, Objectives And Responsibility

The prime aims and objectives of IET Australia are to:

• Further the objectives of the Institution.
• Assist the local networks to meet the professional interests of members, increase membership and enhance the profile of the Institution.
• Co-ordinate the inter-local network activities of the Institution within Australia and plan and undertake those activities which are best carried out at a National level.
• Liaise with IET NZ on joint initiatives, including prestige prizes, International lecture tours and other similar activities.

IET Australia shall have the following responsibilities:

• Budget co-ordination
• Facilitating the submission of Branch business plans and proposals to IET management
• Interface with National Authorities
• Interface with Engineering Institutions at the National level
• Promotion of the IET within the area
• Forum public relations

3. IET Australia Council

A Council shall be established to implement the IET Australia's responsibilities.

The Council shall comprise one corporate member, ideally the incumbent Local Network Chairman, appointed by each Local Network Committee as its representative.

A Local Network should ensure that its representative is sufficiently experienced and informed to represent the Local Network adequately, local network members and separate special interests within IET Australia.

A Local Network Committee may also nominate a corporate member as an alternate member to attend a Council meeting in the absence of its representative. An alternate member shall have the same powers and duties at a Council meeting as the representative.

4. Council's Powers and Duties

The Council shall:

• Facilitate the strategic direction, aims and objectives, plans and the financial budgets for IET Australia in accordance with the policy and strategy of the Institution.
• Determine policy matters at national level.
• Recommend policy changes to meet essential IET Australia's needs.
• Establish such rules and procedures as are necessary for the effective operation of IET Australia.
• Recommend and manage appropriate delegations of responsibilities to facilitate the operation of IET Australia.
• Establish measures and monitor performance against the Aims and Objectives and report to IET management on an annual basis.
• Ensure that Inter-Local Network activities such as visiting speaker programs and national seminars are effectively planned and coordinated.
• Ensure liaison with kindred institutions, academic and other organisations within the geographical area.
• Ensure that there is a program of IET scholarships and prizes established and that maximum recognition accrues to the Institution from this program.
• Establish a Secretariat to handle day to day matters.

5. Office Bearers

IET Australia shall elect annually from its representatives a Chairman, a Deputy Chairman, an Honorary Secretary and an Honorary Treasurer as Office Bearers for a one-year term commencing 1 October. An Office Bearer shall not be eligible for re-election for more than three consecutive terms to one office.

The election of these Office Bearers shall not create any vacancies on the Council.

6. Working Parties

IET Australia may appoint working parties for special purposes consisting of members of the Council and others.

7. Meetings

The business of IET Australia shall be undertaken utilising electronic communication. The Council may meet physically to carry out the business of IET Australia where the costs associated with such a meeting can be justified for the business at hand to be resolved.

8. Quorum

Four nominated representatives or alternative members shall comprise a quorum at a meeting of IET Australia or at any time a decision is taken by electronic means.

9. IET Council

Each year IET Australia will nominate a member to serve on Council for a period of one year from 1 October next following. No member shall fill this role for more than three years in succession.

10. Operating Costs

IET Australia's operations will be funded through an annual business plan submitted to IET management for approval.
