IET Queensland 2010 events outline
- Thursday 25 March 2010.
Informatics Lecture, 5.30 pm (refreshments) for 6.00 pm
Hawken Auditorium at Engineering House, Brisbane.
This was a joint meeting of IET Queensland and Engineers Australia Queensland Division ITEE Branch, the 9th in the annual Informatics Lecture series. The attendance was quite good (35 of whom 18 were IET members), largely due to strong IET publicity which included a “Friends” list of non-members.. It was a successful event, with guest speaker Prof. Iven Mareels, Dean of the University of Melbourne School of Engineering, on the subject “Smart Infrastructure, Smart Planet?”. It was strongly argued that infrastructure information has to be functionally integrated with the environment, and that in order to deserve the accolade “smart” such integration has to require the existence of information loops or feedback paths. The notion of merely acting on the environment or observing the environment does not lead to anything interesting or novel. - Friday 23 April 2010.
Engineering Tour of the Lion Nathan XXXX Brewery, Brisbane
2.45 pm to 4.15 pm with subsequent fellowship.
This was organised by the Young Professionals within IET Queensland, and the six who attended (two of whom were IET members) were given a guided tour of the boiler house, engine room and packaging lines by Brewery Engineer Warren Webb. A good visit, deserving of a larger attendance. - Thursday 17 June 2010.
The Annual Electrical Fraternity Awards Dinner 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm
United Service Club, 183 Wickham Terrace, Brisbane.
The function this year was organised by Engineers Australia Queensland Division. There were no major Awards for presentation, and it was not on such a grand scale as the two previous such events held at the Brisbane Hilton (organised respectively in 2008 and 2009 by the IET and by EA Canberra). It was however still a good opportunity for promotion of the IET, and an enjoyable occasion at which wives, partners and guests were all welcome. In a total attendance of 76, there were 15 IET members (all male), eight of them with their wives. - Wednesday 8 September 2010.
Electrical Manufacturing Lecture, 5.30 pm (refreshments) for 6.00 pm
Hawken Auditorium at Engineering House, Brisbane.
This will be a joint meeting of IET Queensland and Engineers Australia Queensland Division Electrical Branch, the 12th in the annual Electrical Manufacturing Lecture series. The guest speaker will be John Brander, Managing Director – Power Transformers of AREVA T&D Australia Ltd based at Rocklea in Brisbane, who will speak on “Responding to the Challenges of Manufacturing in Australia". A detailed notice will be sent to members and to those on the “IET Friends” listing. - Wednesday 13 October 2010.
Student Evening, incorporating the IET "Present Around the World" Queensland Final, 5.30 pm (refreshments) for 6.00 pm
Hawken Auditorium at Engineering House, Brisbane.
This will be a joint meeting of IET Queensland and Engineers Australia Queensland Division Electrical Branch and also the ITEE Branch. Participant nominations have been called, one each from UQ, QUT, GU, USQ, CQU and JCU. The winner will go forward to the Australian Final, to be held in Perth WA on Friday 15/4/2011. The winner in Perth will proceed to the Asia Pacific Regional Final in Hong Kong or Beijing August 2011, and the winner of this will proceed to the Global Final at the IET Ambition & Achievement Awards Ceremony in London UK November 2011. A detailed notice for the event on 13/10/2010 will be sent to members and to those on the “IET Friends” listing. - Thursday 9 December 2010.
