New England Network recent events

Our most recent meetings have been held in either the greater Boston region or in New York City so as to accommodate our members, the majority of which live within commuting distance of one of these two centres.

The most recent events

The following events have been held this year.

Friday, 13th June 2008

The fourth meeting of the 2008 season was held at the British Consulate-General, in Cambridge, Boston, MA. Richard Ladroga presented the topic People & Power. A highlight of this presentation was an impressive demonstration of Tesla coils. Attendance was moderate but, possibly because this presentation was not during term time, we were not able to attract the hoped for younger members. It is hoped that we might be able to repeat this presentation in the future.

Wednesday, 7th May 2008

The third meeting of the 2008 season was held in the Faculty Lounge of the Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York City. Dr. Fairfid Caudle delivered an illustrated lecture entitled "Laboratory Instruments in Psychology." This was the same as that given at Savoy Place in January. Although attendance was limited the interest was high.

Friday, 11th April 2008

The second meeting of the 2008 season was held at the Publick House in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Anthony Bainbridge demonstrated the IET's web based Career Management tool and discussed engineering certification. Following this demonstration Dr. Bainbridge presented "The Learning Enterprise" and discussed the factors affecting the management of organizations.

Wednesday, 12th March 2008

The first meeting of the 2008 season was held in the Faculty Lounge of the Cooper Union School of Engineering in New York City. Dr. Ender St. John-Olcayto presented "Mathematical modeling and simulation of a maneuvering spacecraft near the International Space Station."

IET members were exposed to the use of MathWorks, Inc. MATLAB (r) and Simulink (r) software simulation programs in evaluating and overcoming the challenges of docking spacecraft at the International Space Station. During his presentation, filled with photos of the Space Station and simulation results, Ender showed how trajectory equations are evaluated for use in simulation programs and how they are used to simulate a variety of 'what-if' situations. Ender is a manager and principal engineer of Consulting Services at The MathWorks, Inc.

The session began at 5:30pm with a wine and cheese reception that keep the group together through the hour long presentation and an hour afterwards discussing simulation, job openings and conditions in the Northeast and IET matters in general.

Prior year's events

Since it started organizing meetings in the fall of 1997, the New England Network has held between four and six meetings per year on a wide range of subjects.
