Speaker

Dr. David James

About this event

How do our football stars take the perfect free-kick? Why have tennis rackets become so large? What technologies are driving the speed of cyclists? How can physics unravel cricket’s mysteries of ‘swing’ and ‘reverse swing’? What are the absolute limits of human athletic performance and how does the latest technology make humans run faster, jump higher and be stronger? Using a host demonstrations and multimedia; Dr David James will explore the physics that controls sport and ask if technology has gone too far in the quest for sporting success?

Modern sport is intrinsically linked to science and engineering. New technologies have dramatically shaped the development of sport, sometimes causing controversy, but always generating fascination. In this lecture David will use his extensive subject knowledge to explore the issues that are facing the sporting world, and will ask where the future might take us?

The Engineering Gold Prestige Lecture forms part of the What is the connection between Technology and Engineering in Modern Sport? Conference.

This conference has been hosted by the following:

Prof. Gideon Langholtz, H.I.T. President.

Prof. Aaron Peled, Dean, Faculty of Engineering.

Prof. Arie Braunstein, IET Israel, Chairman.

Prof. Gady Golan, IET Israel Secretary, Faculty of Engineering, Coordinator and organizer of the Conference.

In addition to Dr James there will also be the following speakers:

Dr. Itzick Ben Melech, Wingate Inst. - “Elite sports in modern times”.

Mr. Tsvika Sherf, Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv - Basketball Head Coach – “Applied technologies in modern basketball”.
