		<description><![CDATA[ Hi all,<br /><br />I am starting my final year of my Electrical/ Electronic Degree (top-up) i have completed a HND in the same subject as well as been working as a design engineer (using AutoCAD & E-Plan) a software engineer (programming Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi & some Siemens PLC's and relevant HMI's) and have also got experience in running a project from meetings and quotations all the way through to testing and commissioning stages. This was mainly with the food industry but now i looking at trying to make a break into the Oil & Gas industry or Drilling & Mining Industry. <br /><br />This is purely for the larger finanical gains and greater opportunities that i may be able to see from such leading and larger companies involved in these areas. I would love to work internationally as opposed to just nationwide and would possibly even relocate.<br /><br />I am a little niave to the types of jobs that would be available to someone like myself and i do not plan on making a move until i have my degree completed along with other courses such as my Comp'Ex, BOSIET & MIST.<br /><br />Would it be of any advantage to me to take part in an NVQ level 3 electrical maintenance/ installation course just so i could take a more hands on job to find a way into these industries or would it be better advised i follow a different route? I have experience "on the tools" (aiding installations, fault findings and control panel wiring,etc)as part of my job over the past 4-5years however do not have the paperwork to provide back up to this.<br /><br />If there is any advice available i would greatly appreciate it.<br /><br />Thank you.<br /><br />Regards<br /><br />Daniel]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[ Afternoon,<br /><br />I'm looking for some guidance on the do's and dont's of contactors and where they can be placed in motor circuits, and hope someone may be able to help.<br /><br />I have a situation where I need to put remote reversing of a pump via a dialup RTU. Its been fine with Star Delta anfd DOL, as well as with some VSDs as there is sometimes a parameter option to enable reverse control.<br /><br />However, I have a softstart that I want to reverse. I was going to put the reversing contactor on the line side but believe some units will detect phase rotation errors, therefore want to put the reversing contactor on the load side. 		<description><![CDATA[ The perception of the agriculture industry as traditional and reluctant to change is, more and more, inaccurate. Although lately small-scale and artisan farming has experimented a revival, many traditional farmers want to improve their productivity and yield, like any other supply chain, and, therefore consider automation the way of achieving this goal. The concept of Smart Farm is emerging as the way to increase productivity and improve product quality.<br /><br />Recently a remarkable development in automation and mechanisation has been achieved. It is particularly relevant its application in the livestock industry.<br /><br />Within this context, the unification in how software of such systems is developed and the use of simulation processes to study what are the best solutions adopt, attending the particular characteristics of the farm and the production constitutes an interesting field of research and industrial application.<br /><br />The Smart Farm concept includes not only the areas previously cited, but also and specially simulation. Using suitable simulation tools, farmers may identify not only the best equipment, but also how to improve the production process, the selection of products and obtain solutions which anticipate future problems. I believe engineers need to be "enthused" during their formative years in secondary school. To answer this we have to look at why we went there in the first place. It's been 40 years since we last put a foot on another planet and we've not set foot anywhere since. It's well known that the driver for the Apollo programme was a Cold War race, but a lesser-known fact is that there was initially a serious scientific purpose behind it.Nasa's original reason to go to the Moon was to read the missing pages of the geological book on our planet, where very few rocks go back much beyond the Cambrian. But with the Moon there is a complete record of the bombardment period and further back. And this was the scientific reason upon which the proposition of sending men to the Moon was founded. But that was soon forgotten as it became simply about beating the Russians, which we know happened in the subsequent missions that landed 12 men on the Moon.<br /><br /><br /><b>Against:<br />Mars is the real deal now.</b><br /><br />Do we need to go to the Moon first, as some of the Apollo moon-walkers suggest, and set up a base there? Or do we just focus on Mars and forget about going back to the Moon? Some of the astronauts I talk to say there is a benefit in going back to the Moon, while others say it is a waste of money because we only have limited resources and this will delay our attempts on Mars. Buzz Aldrin has proposed a Mars Cycler that will relay between the two planets, taking about five months to complete a single journey. His only question is: what are we waiting for? Mars is the real deal. This is where we will get our 21st Century rocket heroes, our new Neil Armstrong and our new Buzz Aldrin.]]></description>

I have found various standards that have either been withdrawn or superseded.  I would like to know what is the minimum acceptable result needed for a 200m length of 3.3/5 KV armoured cable when performing the above test. I would like to be involved within projects that would take me either offshore or to other places such as Canada in the hope for long term contracts abroad or with a permanent move to Canada for work. <br /><br />I am a Controls Engineer and have been working as such for the past 4 years now, I have completed my HNC electrical engineering and have an understanding of PLC's, HMI's and control panel design using E-Plan P8 Electrica and AutoCAD 2D Design. I have been working greatly on system commissioning, overlooking installations and working on getting projects completed by myself and alongside senior engineers. In the past 6 months I have been given extra responsibilities such as project engineering including estimating and quoting of potential work.<br /><br />In September 2012 I will begin my HND Electrical/ Electronic engineering and plan on gaining this qualification prior to such a move which will also give me a further 2 years experience in the job I am doing now.<br /><br />I know this message is rather vague and I am happy to provide further details, should they be required. This is all an idea at the moment, but an idea that appeals to me.<br /><br />My main concerns are what level of study should I require to make such a move to either offshore or a different country? 		<description><![CDATA[ My name is Jag, I work in a company called Hallam Castings based in Doncaster, United Kingdom. <br /> <br />We have a Frech Machine DK450,  we are having  a few problems  with this machine an "Over Heating problem". <br /> <br />The machine starts  fine, works normally but the circulating oil is getting too hot which  is over heating the machine. <br /> <br />I took out the heat exchanger, cleared the water path by soaking it with  de-scaler which cleared the blockage of water<br /> <br /> three weeks ago.  We recently contacted Frech UK, they advised us to take out the solenoid which is on the water inlet <br /> <br />pipe, this did not solve our problem.. <br /> <br />I was asked to control the flow of water through the heat exchanger, it was cooling the temperature slightly but the temperature was not constant and quickly over heats  displaying a warning message on the screen "Machine is over heated". <br /> <br />I  have checked the oil circulation motor, which is  working fine, but I noticed the  past few of days the motor is also over <br />heating.<br /><br />I want to know what is the operating temperature of the relief valve and other solenoid valve, because some of the solenoid valves heats up to 58 degree C. <br /><br /> <br /> <br />Can you please help me with this situation. <br /> <br />Kind regards <br />Jag]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[ We have been asked to inspect a waste water treatment plant which contains above ground glass lined steel tanks which act as the aeration basins. Within the tanks are galvanised steel structures and components, including electric motors. All of the wetted galvanised structures have suffered from severe corrosion i.e. all of the galvanising has been removed in a short timeframe. We checked the influent and there was nothing unusual. The pumping station which feeds the plant is also ok. We wondered if the corrosion is electrolytic. There is contaminated land in close proximity and also buried live cables.  We are not aware if there is a cathodic protection system in place.Has anyone had any experience of this?]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[ I'm surprised by the assessment of the future of the Post Office, whilst the internet will reduce letter volumes and government related transactions, it also presents a huge opportunity if it can capitalise on the growing volumes of parcel post resulting from internet shopping.<br /><br />Having the option of getting parcels delivered to a convenient local pick-up point so they could be collected before or after work, not having to be at home to receive them or having to travel to a remote industrial estate would be great.<br /><br />To some extent as a service, it is also part self-funded, in that the cost of handling fees paid to the post office/collection point are offset by savings to the courier by dropping multiple parcels at a single point, saving of time and fuel.<br /><br />That said, the Post Office would need to work on their customer service, closing at 17:00 isn't exactly convenient for most people who work full time.<br /><br />]]></description>

Then again there never has been the right place for systems engineering because its nature is that it doesn't sit neatly in one single category. <br /><br />Many moons ago (2 years) we released an open source enterprise architecture framework, <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://sf.net/projects/trak">TRAK</a>, aimed at systems engineers and being barely adequate, pragmatic and simple to use / understand. The main thrust is to produce views that describe real world architecture (relationships between various things) to promote communication and discussion and support analysis.<br /><br />Although it <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.theiet.org/forums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=227&threadid=32342&highlight_key=y&keyword1=trak">originated within rail</a> it isn't at all rail-specific since a system doesn't know it's used within a particular domain.<br /><br />TRAK is based on the international standard - ISO/IEC 42010 for architecture description of systems. It has <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://sf.net/projects/trakviewpoints">a set of viewpoints</a>, each of which is a specification for a view that addresses a particular typical set of concerns. Each of these in turn uses a  defined set of object types and relationships taken from the <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://sf.net/projects/trakmetamodel">underlying metamodel</a>.<br /><br />For a while now I've thought that there is common ground between safety and security because both address risk, threats, vulnerability and manage the design such that there is an acceptable or tolerable risk. I've posted a description of these thoughts on the TRAK Viewpoints forum with a view to collecting some motivated people together to see whether enterprise architecture could help augment existing methods and whether there is an economical / sparse set of concepts, relationships from which some view might be drawn and therefore specified. I'm particularly keen to get anyone who has knowledge of security and the sorts of things the Cabinet Office require via the <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/resource-library/security-policy-framework">Security Policy Framework</a> e.g. RMADS (which might itself comply with one of more ISOs in this area).<br /><br />It may only be commenting on discussions or helping identify concepts since those of us more deeply involved with TRAK can interpret and implement. We can do this successfully for the control circuitry by utilising certified safety relays, which are available from various manufactures. But the problem comes when we try to achieve SIL 3 compliance of the motor starter. We can demonstrate the control circuit will reliably activate, but have trouble ensuring that the power side of the circuit, the final element such as the circuit breaker or contactor, will reliably activate when triggered by the emergency stop control circuit. <br />Has anybody come across this issue before? How did you demonstrate compliance and do you know a manufacturer of HV or MV circuit breakers certified to SIL 3? Any help appreciated, thanks]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[ Hi all, thanks for your time reading this. <br /><br />I sit my tower crane, pedestrian crane slinger and banksman license on monday. A 10 day course. I have a job on site lined up, straight up the crane no slinger duties etc<br /><br />I eventually want to become an off shore rustabout then work my way up as getting to become a crane op straight away will be a struggle. <br /><br />I have no offshore experience but i have read about becoming a slinger/banksman offshore doesnt require experience aslong as the oprative is competent. <br /><br />I know a bloke who has been on the rigs for 20+ years so this may come in my favour.
