I find support in this view from the limited number of names that appear in the listings.
Do the views of a self-selecting group of ranters warrant collection as being representative of our age? At the very least, the action plan should be supported by some statistically based assessment of the demography represented by the posters.

I am 2 months into a new computer running Windows 8. I find that Windows appears to be very fragile, too often inexplicably slowing down, programs (sorry, Apps) refusing to do anything, hanging on Restart, and I am interested to know if anyone else is having a similar experience with Windows 8.
For the record the computer is a Samsung NP350V5 laptop, with Intel i7 CPU @ 2.4GHz, 8 GB RAM, 1TB disc, running 64 bit Windows 8 regularly updated.
The Restart problem is the only frequent definable problem. On Restart the computer does not shut down but stays with the revolving dots. I have left it like this for 30 mins. I shut down by holding the power button for 5 seconds, and then switch on and everything works. This is particularly annoying with automatic restarts after updates. But then again it often works normally.
The other regular occurrence is that the pdf reader (I have tried Adobe X and XI) stops working. It will load documents and then freeze.
I can have a frustrating evening, doing restarts and shutdown/reboot without effect, only to find for next morning it is working perfectly.
Anyone found anything similar?
David

There is an old adage that says "Thsoe who fail to heed the lessons of history are destined to repeat them".The lesson here is that, with the advnet of the personal computer, users of main frame computing services could not wait to free themselves of the shackles of the IT manager, then called something like a "data centre" manager. Why? Certainly not to save money, because the personal computer was then, and still is, far more expensive than a shared centralized service. The reason it happened was to be in control of your own destiny. A data centre or IT manager can freeze a business with policies and procedures to keep data safe or controlled, when functional managers need to get their job done. By forcing cloud or centralized services you are in conflict with human nature and it will not be the ubiquitous change that many have predicted.

But the real issue is what the consumer wants. In the past, despite the leading-edge technology available, the public rejected laser disc, minidisc and digital audio tape. Just didn't want it, and I think that is what will happen with this question.
Coping with Engineering Failure of Cryptographic Systems

This is a question that CESG ( www.cesg.gov.uk ) and the cabinet office refuse to help me or my company with. I have also put the question to the Information Security Group at Royal Holloway University of London, but with no clear answer as yet.

Perhaps someone in IET could point me to published research in this field:

Lets assume (for the purposes of this enquiry) that all the alternative public key cryptographic mathematics and algorithms just work from a black box point of view and can be slot in replacements for each other at the implementation or application level. So the application software can just choose algorithms from within a set of public key crypto and certificate handling computational packages, say package 1, 2 or 3.

This enables me to just concentrate on discussing the engineering assumptions and the engineering structure. I don't even want to be specific about what engineering assumptions are required I just want to put the assumptions into the two normal engineering classes.

a) A singular assumption that if found incorrect would mean a particular algorithm fails to provide the level of protection demanded of it in the engineering specification.

b) A singular assumption that if found incorrect would mean that all algorithm across all packages fail to provide the level of protection demanded of them in the engineering specification. (Common Mode Failure if you like, that could perhaps happen if the are in reality no one way or trap door functions in mathematics for example)

So what I am really talking about is what would need to happen from an engineering point of view in the event of a class (a) failure and or in the event of a class (b) failure.

First Case - Class (a) failure

It seems to me that part of the structures in place now can cope with a class (a) failure and some can't.

So the at the application level different algorithms can be in principle be switched in and out, but in terms of the certificate you buy from VeriSign or Thawte this is not possible.

Therefore the question simplifies to what are the reasons stopping VeriSign or Thawte providing certificates compatible with two or more crypto algorithm packages? Do they have a vested interest in keeping loyal with a particular technology? If so what are the reasons for this technological lock-in?

Second Case - Class (b) failure

Are people thinking about this possibility as well. For example partitioning of the internet into physically secure links and physically insecure links.

If there were no public key cryptography algorithms available to engineers at some future point in time we might have to have a symmetric key link provided by BT for example to a secure data centre and then they either route requests on to banks or other secure data centres via second secure link, or they pass the request into the open internet. Everyone would have to trust BT to keep everything physically secure and no release our data to other parties.

What are the cheapest and most practically options if we had to live in a future world like this, where physical engineering solutions and trusted partners were used to provided for our data security needs?

Are systems security engineers actively engaged now in researching these two classes of failure?

There is a IET conference on cyber security for industrial control systems on 6th February and I am not sure whether to go or not.

http://conferences.theiet.org/cyber-ics/

The organisers have not confirmed the keynote speaker as yet, but I have advised them that I would not want to hear from a speaker that simply glosses over the problem of how we deal with the potential consequiences of engineering failure in cyber security systems. Especially as more and more industrial control systems get connected to the internet (knowingly or unknowingly). There is no lack of material for such analyses; there are plenty of engineering case studies to look at - indeed there are hundreds of serious failures in the public domain and probably thousands of serious failures know to the cyber security industry that are kept hushed up.

James Arathoon

For:
Google's online geographic systems are really helping the way we see the world

Against:
Google's online geographic systems are not really helping the way we see the world

The argument for:
I've been with the Royal Geographical Society for more than 35 years and when I first started working here, helping to support remote field research projects, the only mapping available was in paper format. Often these maps could only be bought 'in country' and would have strict security conditions attached to them. Today it's different and we're all geographers, largely because we're able to make use of online geospatial data mapping and photographic technologies. And the great thing is, we don't have to be map-readers. We can look at Google's Street View for a virtual representation of places. This curiosity can lead us from being a desktop explorer or an armchair traveller to enabling us to move between different types of imagery that can help us interpret what we are seeing.

The argument against:
When companies publicise their good works, it's often worth having a closer look at why they are so keen to make a splash. This is going to seem churlish given what visual mapping can potentially do. But Google's Street View smacks of geeky tokenism down to the cheeky little penguin you move along a fixed path across a small outlying island of Antarctica. Street View, as implemented today, is a snapshot. A guided tour of a location where you are not allowed to step off the yellow brick road. You can peer into Shackleton's Hut, using the view presented by a panoramic camera to at least get a sense of the space. But the visual distortion presented by these wide-angle lenses does little to help provide a sense of real space. The user is entirely reliant on visual cues to get information that would instantly click into place if one were there in real life. Because the user's viewpoint is from a fixed point, with limited ability to zoom, the vital visual data that we use everyday is missing. The question is: is this better today than a set of well-shot photographs that are designed to show the space and its relationship to the outside world?

The reason for this is that the communications infrastructure, of which the Internet is the absolute central component, underlies our way of life in the 21st century.

Against:
President Obama has his mind on the elections when talking about the cyber threat.

The bottom line is that the government needs to move swiftly to maintain credibility - especially in an election year.

Earlier in 2011 the White House revealed language on new legislation directing private industries to improve computer security voluntarily, and have those standards reviewed by the Department of Homeland Security. The government clearly has plenty of work to do on preventing insider attacks. Our view is that it is about time the White House has caught up on ideas and technology that many corporate clients have known about for several years.

A different/fluctuating result every time a test is carried out. We have analysed the power supply & this is steady with no harmful harmonic interference.

There are large 1000kW UPS on site but I have never experienced this issue on other datacentre projects

Any assistance any one can give me in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

These sample programs are developed with an SDK called Ozeki VoIP SIP SDK. I found the sample programs quite interesting my only concern is that the programming language they are developed is C#. I am not familiar with this programming language so I need your help. Could you please tell me how to start using this software?
I see the significance of Data Centres to the way our society works today.
I see also that a variety of skills are required in the operation of DC's.
However I do not see that DC's are unique in this respect.

A car is also a hybrid system of mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, and chemical too.
An ocean cruise ship requires whole ranges of skill sets, as does an electricity generating station, both operating continuously, no less that a DC. A passenger aircraft has massive safety issues around all sorts of engineering specialisations. Heat transfer is an issue in all of these systems, as is manipulation of electricity and mechanical load-handling plus other fluid mechanics, civil and chemical engineering. All need electronic control, communication and information systems.

In fact, when engineering is applied to real problems, the solution almost always involves a wide range of skills, which includes IT.

Any engineering degree course in the UK today includes significant IT elements.
There are engineering graduates that are IT practitioners that might qualify for Chartered Engineer status.

The problems that lead to a lack of professional qualification in DC staff are:
1/ The professional institutions do not capture employees that work in the IT sector.
2/ The IT sector does not recognise value in professional accreditation in this sector
3/ Many employers are American and do not have an understanding of professional qualification.

The first two are related and are both symptoms of the fact that the IT industry places too high a value on proprietary training qualifications from major vendors. Each vendor is of course focussed on their own products and not on any general engineering principles.

I am a Chartered Engineer working in the IT sector. I share the concern that IT employees frequently have very narrow perceptions of their working environment. They wear badges of CCIE, MSCE and others, but they have no general engineering training or mindset.

The solution is to hire people who already have the broader perception and to take engineering graduates with the right broad background and invest in developing their skills in the specialist elements that are required in the DC.
The compromise that the industry will have to make is that the man-power will be more expensive.

But Mr Davis's motivation seems to be that DC operational performance would be higher if staff had a better professional engineering attitude. So perhaps the advantages of good people would out-weigh the incremental costs of hiring and developing professional engineering staff.
Is this a simple case of "you get what you pay for"?

Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of regulations about this:
We've installed many servers across the UK and a lot of the server racks are fed by 3 Phase power. This is presented in a PDU unit, where C13 to C14 cables are run to each server. Question, some engineers do not check that on a dual PSU server, there is a possibility that a 220V from differing phases can be connected introducing 400V into an enclosure rated at 220V. I can't believe this is acceptable, and ask if anyone knows of regulations highlighting this.

Kind regards

Ian
