HND vs Foundation Degree - Electrical / Electronic Engineering

Hello,

I'm currently an Approved Electrician but would like to head into the world of engineering/

I've been looking at which course to study and had decided that a full-time HND in Electrical & Electronic Engineering over 2 years sounded like the best option. However, I just discovered foundation Degrees and I'm a little confused.

After speaking to colleges/uni's, they've advised me that the two courses are essentially the same thing, just under a different name. But 2 years is a lot of time (and money) to invest and I want to be sure that I'm going for the correct course.

Can anybody shed a little more light on the subject? Are foundation degrees recognized, accepted and sought after by industry? More so than HND's? Which will make me more employable once I've finished?

Thanks in advance,
Sam

Hi,
I am just about to complete my HND in E&E Eng at UCBC and i'm looking at topping up to Beng from september. Due to my unique situation at work, i can't go down the traditional day release part time route. However i can attend block residential or even carry out distance learning. It looks like blackburn will not be offering the Beng top up this year but i have found two universities that offer something similar, bradford university (E&E) and portsmouth university (electronic systems). Is there anyone here who has completed either of these courses that could shed a bit more light on them? Or can anyone recommend others? I am more interested in the electrical side of things(power), also i am after an accredited degree.
Many thanks

Hi all, this is my first ever post on a forum like this so bare with me! I have decided to design and construct a programmable watering device for a domestic lawn as a HNC project. I have selected a (cheap) latching solenoid valve (to preserve battery power) to open and close the supply of mains water to a sprinkler attachment on the lawn, but can't seem to find a suitable controller. It must operate the solenoid instantaneously (as it is a latching solenoid) allow the flow of water for an hour, and then operate it closed again, it will preferably run off a 6v battery, and be relatively compact. The user must be able to programme the time at which this happens. Any help will be appreciated.

Hello,

My background is in the visual arts. I'm constructing a machine to make part of my job easier. Given a power source that rotates in only one direction, I'm looking to move an object back and forth with it.

I first considered an Arduino sketch, and a little 12V. DC motor. This is problematic in that the power source is manually controlled, and it needs to remain so due to the relative fragility of the material this machine processes. My hand can feel the slight resistance that precedes material failure and react even before I think about it. I'm not aware of a sensor that could do that.

I've also considered using levers at either end of an ordinary threaded steel rod with a triple gear system at one end; a driver, an idler, and a driven gear for lack of better names. The driver gear would be connected to the power source by a pair of pulleys, and a belt, while the driven gear would change rotational directions depending on the position of the idler. I haven't abandoned that idea.

I was using a ratcheting screwdriver today, and thought the bi-directional grooved shaft & it's pawl might be a more elegant way to accomplish the same back and forth motion. It could be made of nylon, steel, or stainless, but I'm having trouble sourcing either parts or any research material due to my nomenclature deficit.

If you know it, would you please be so kind as to pass along the name of that shaft? If you also happen to know the name of an outfit(s) who manufactures, or retails these parts, I'd be much obliged to know that as well. Thank you in advance.

Peace,

Dave

Hello everyone!

First post here today, but been reading a good few topics - some really interesting things on this forum!

I am currently studying with the Open University, studying towards a chemistry degree. In recent months I have been seriously thinking about careers (mainly the salary) and job enjoyment. This has led me to engineering and has opened my eyes to what I am interested in and would like to do.
I am now presented with the opportunity of changes courses with the Open University, as I was quite early on in my studies.

My girlfriends step dad has been involved in projects such as Trawsfynydd and now Dounreay, which has really caught my interest and having a big impact on my wanting to get involved in Engineering

The problem I have now is getting onto the Open University course (one remaining IET accredited course) and then working out what to specialise in.
The course itself (B65 Bachelor of Engineering) is terminating in a few years, so I would have to get my head down and complete the course soon.
I have looked at all the modules the IET requires I study and I can then build on from there.
One of my questions are: which area of engineering pays the most? (I know this sounds very materialistic, but I am interested to know peoples real world opinions)
I have a passion for studying and being involved in projects relating to Energy and renewable power (I enjoyed jarathoon's topic on the ITER's JET project) and anything to do with the Nuclear industry. However I do also like the idea of being involved in large scale civil projects (bridges, roads and the like)

I would like some opinions on which people enjoy the most, which is going to be the most up and coming and peoples opinion of, if they were going at things from afresh, which area of engineering they would specialise in.

A little bit about me: My name is Michael, I've recently turned 21 and I am currently working for a nationwide up and coming legal firm (which I have no interest or prior knowledge in - its going towards the mortgage fund)
I have studied heavily in maths and science in secondary school and took Biology, Chemistry and Physics at College.
The initial plan was to "Get a chemistry degree and go from there" but now I am that bit older and wiser I wish I was one of those people who had a career in mind, rather than just a degree choice.

So someone - please help me!

Hello all, this if my first post here.

I am wanting to become qualified in Electrical Engineering, not necessarily in Electronic. Less to do with circuits and more to do with electricity generation.

I am wondering what courses are available for this, as the majority either seem to be a mash of both or circuitry biased.

I am not sure in which direction to go at the moment, as there is no one to talk to about this. But for me, Electromagnetic fields and interactions is fascinating to me.

Please can anyone advise. Thank you.

I am currently faced with a choice.

I can either continue to do my MEng year at my current university, or move to Manchester to complete my masters at The University of Manchester (a red brick).

The problem is, due to the increase in tuition fees, attending Manchester will cost me an extra £6,000, however on my CV it shall say that I graduated from a red brick university.

I guess my question is, to all those professional engineers out there, is it worth it?
I have a 15-year-old nephew. He's enthusiastic about engineering and IT in particular. Next summer, his school organises work experience placements, but where he lives - in Somerset - there are few engineering companies of any size, and his school seems unable to help beyond pointing him towards McDonalds or Tesco.

He's asked if he can work with me in London where opportunities, in theory, should abound. But work experience placements for school-age students seem to be brokered solely by local councils. I can't find any organisations (including my own employer) that accept direct applications.

It seems a shame to let his enthusiasm and initiative go to waste, especially as he seems to have a certain amount of talent. Can anybody suggest a route for finding a London-based organisation he can work with for 2-3 weeks or so?
