I recently visited a a joiners workshop (about 30 machines). There is a 100A / 300mA RCD protecting the whole installation.
The RCD also acts as a main switch as it feeds the 100A main bus-bar chamber but there is no overload protection.

Surely overload protection is required?

I'd agree - but overload protection can be provided in a number of ways...

does the supplier's fuse give protection? (like for the bus-bar in a domestic CU?)

does the nature of the load(s) or downstream devices provide overload protection?
