Evening all. We were asked to run in some rigid ducting to ventilate 10 small infant school cubicles. This we did fine and fitted the correct dampers etc. The problem is that the primary contractor has asked us to perform all of the tests to comply with building regs i.e the amount of air that is being cleared per minute. Does anyone know of the type of meter we will need and cost? Also is there a specific certificate that we need to issue? Many thanks, Dave.

Well, you either need a pitot static tube to measure velocity and static pressure in the duct or a ballometer to measure the volume flow through the extract terminals or you need a vane anemometer to measure velocity (and you know cross sectional area so you can calculate volume flow).

Assuming this is a little squirbo or similar and you have an idea of the ducts you've installed I wouldn't bother testing it - just calculate the volume flow through your known duct resistance and use that value - failing that use about 50% of the fan static pressure and go from there.

Write it down on a bit of paper that says "Commissioning Record" at the top and give the main contractor that - unless there's a sharp building services engineer checking all this, no one will be any the wiser -

Cheers chaps. Basically its flat ducting and t sections with round ends to slot on the fans. It is running full time and boosts when the light sensor switches on. I'll knock up a nice piece of paper all right !!

I have a tester, all nice and new, clean and shiny, it's not getting any serious work at the moment,

Balancing the system is part of the routine, some vents may be passing more air than others.

How much difference between this testing and that for LEV under COSHH please?

As I have all the kit and quals, and do COSHH LEV testing, just never thought about this side of it TBH.

I haven't got the faintest idea!
