A friend has a canal narrow boat & accidently dropped a live appliance into the water, causing the shore rcd to trip.I was under the impression that the metal hull of the boat was isolated from the shore earth by isolating tx or other device,so could this indicate a fault in the boat wiring?.The boat has its own rcd.
Regards,hz.

Having worked on private pleasure craft in this country for many years on mechanical and electrical i never once saw an isolating transformer to seperate shore supply from the vessel. These were just wired straight through a 30mA RCD, both on the shore and the boat. This was common practice from small boatyards to major manufacturers.
