I find it very strange, that if registered with EC, there is no means to demonstrate your registration grade ie: the registration cards EC used to supply for approx £5 - The only way for me to demonstrate registration is by carrying around my EC Registration Certificate which really is a bit rediculous,
Is nothing being done about this, would be obliged for an answer from IET. |

In the past the EC has issued a professional registration card like a credit card.

Doesn't the IET membership card display this? I have a CIBSE membership card and it shows my registration grade.

The IET Membership card displays:
IET logo Member number The Institution of Engineering and Technology Name of Member |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

It should tell you whether you are C Eng / I Eng or Eng Tech, bearing in mind it is the IET who registers you with EC .

As I recall this was queried some time ago and the response from IET was the card was intended to be issued on a one off basis. As a result of this it was decided not to include details of registration qualifications, so as to avoid the issue of supplying news cards and save on costs.
To maintain longevity of the cards, they should only show membership grades. i.e TMIET, MIET or FIET. If a member should transfer from MIET to FIET, then a new card would be issued. May I suggest, the IET consider replacing the diary with IET business cards at the same cost of producing the diary? The cards would include full academic and professional registration qualification as well as membership grade. This would be most welcomed by members, even if the diary has to go, and make them feel the cost of membership is worth the price for these special IET printed business cards. Imagine having to give out one of these cards to an employer, client or potential customer? I'm sure it would make members feel proud to be part of the IET and also advertise the IET to those potential new members and businesses. If members want to keep the diary as well, then annual membership costs can be raised accordingly. What do members think? Edited: 05 November 2010 at 05:44 PM by mbirdi |

What do members think? Personally, I'd rather have a diary which I can use to make notes of appointments, rather than a bit of plastic. I can't remember the last time I needed to show anyone what my qualifications were. ------------------------- S P Barker BSc PhD MIET |

Ever year the IEEE-USA issues a light card stating
Name and PE if a professional engineer Member grade Membership duration year of validity |

I would vote for the card over the diary.
More and more people are using electronic devices instead of diarys. As a contractor I am asked several times a year to produce evidence of training and compency so now I carry a folder in my car with copies of all my documents. I think a card would be a step towards having engineers recognised in industry, particularly in construction. This is long overdue. |

Come on IET get something done about this, none of your registered engineers can demonstrate their professional competence other than by carrying around their Diplomas - How about the people that want them pay for them, the people that dont want them dont get them ?
Or arrange for EC to supply cards to demonstrate EC Registration, the way they used to. |

Personally, I'd rather have a diary which I can use to make notes of appointments Personally I use Microsoft Outlook for this task and the IET diary will sit gathering dust in the drawer until I decide to throw it out. But I do understand that not every member is within a few meters of their PC all day. |

But I do understand that not every member is within a few meters of their PC all day. I use Outlook every day at work. But I also like to have a paper diary available for evening and weekend appointments. One day, I may get a smart phone and do away with the paper diary. I can be a bit of a Luddite at times - I will only embrace a new technology when I can see a need for it, rather than just because it's cool. ------------------------- S P Barker BSc PhD MIET |

I will only embrace a new technology when I can see a need for it, rather than just because it's cool. Personally I see my smartphone as a necessity not a "cool" fad. You should look into getting one, you won't go back! |

Yes a card would be good, credit card size, nice to fit in the wallet.
Covering for example IET logo & EC logo Name: John Smith CEng MIET / IEng MIET / Eng Tech Grade : Chartered Engineer / Incorporated Engineer / Technician Member Number : 1234567 I think this would be good idea for the follwoing reasons 1. Could be displayed at interview to potential employer. 2. It displays the competence levels achieved by member. Edited: 19 June 2011 at 07:15 AM by Brian Robertson |

2 friends of mine both in the medical profession thought the EC registration cards were a brilliant idea - and actually said it should be introduced in the medical profession for Doctors and Surgeons as there is no easy check on qualifications - job interviews are the exception (local hospital id only or take their word for being qualified).
I still have the original card but the registration number has broken off Tim Guy |
