Nigel Fine, Chief Executive of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), has been appointed to the Government's newly created Technician Council, which has been set up to promote the role of technicians across a range of different sectors. Press release.

It is nice to see that the IET will be represented on the Technician Council, but will this take away time from the Chief Executives duties for the IET, or will it be classified as paid overtime.

It also seems to me that our former Chief Executive Mr. Robin Mc Gill was more active with the membership in these forums and the IET.tv, than our present one. Or am I wrong and being negative.?

The topics to be addressed from this press release are these:

Raising public perception of technicians across all sectors, including engineering
The qualifications system and progression routes for technicians
The role of professional institutions and professional registration at technician level

Nowhere on this press release does the first meeting of the Technician Council mention incorporated engineers.

Does the coalition government recognise their importance in terms of their expertise?

No! It will just be another free lunch break.

Robin Saxby and Robin McGill were active with the membership. Any chance we can have them back as President and CEO? I'm not sure the present lot are with us in mind and body.

This is absolutely diabolical. We have purported learned organisation which, frankly, doesn't know what time of day it is! If a non-engineering fraternity, (say Chemists or Accountants) were looking into the EC and the IET, they would see, what appears to be, absolute chaos and indecision. Incidentally, my brother (a mathematician working on all things fluid dynamics and chaos theory), considered joining the IET. He managed to get a look through the glass darkly and changed his mind rather quickly.

Today, I received an email me, (nothing more than a begging letter really), asking me to nominate an individual for membership, because as an existing member, the IET valued my opinion. There is no way possible at this point in time I could and would nominate an individual for membership. I never thought I would see the day when I thought along these lines.

It just sums up the current situation which, quite frankly, isn't going to get any better unless drastic changes are made by both EC/IET. I wouldn't hold my breath on this matter.
