Before the games began, there were speculations around the world about the games taking place at all ! The LGBT issue further made it somewhat complicated for Russia. But, it certainly goes to the credit to Russian authorities that they continued to work really hard towards making the games a grand success. Having witnessed the 2008 Summer Olympic Games at a number of venues in Beijing, I can say for sure that Chinese authorities did their best to convert a barren piece of land into a perfect Olympic venue with utmost precision, ensuring that Beijing Olympics became another milestone in the history of Olympics. This time the challenge was much bigger before Russia. The games are still on. But going by the reports emanating from Sochi, players and journos seem to be relishing every bit of it, right from the inaugural event. As the E&T article points out, there might be some shortcomings in shaping the venues as per the original designs, but that must not rob the Russians off their share of kudos in planning and executing the task despite flowing adversities from different corners. An incident free Sochi will also help in sending across a strong message to the proponents of terror. Let the spirit of Olympics prevail. Amen!
