On the front cover of E&T Volume 7 Issue 3, April 2012, the following morse code is displayed:
-- --. -.-- / -.-. .-.. --. / -.-. --.- -.. Which means: MGY CLG CQD MGY is Titanic's callsign, CQD is the distress call, what is the CLG part? I can't find any reference to this sequence of code being transmitted by Titanic. Only CQD - DE - MGY. (There is a full transcript here http://www.hf.ro/) Anyone? |

So, the message (maybe never transmitted by Titanic) would in theory be: MGY = "Titanic" CLG = "Calling" "CQD" = "Calling any station Distress", predecessor to "SOS" which was also (in)famously transmitted by Titanic ------------------------- Eur Ing Graham Kenyon CEng MIET |

Never heard of "CLG" used as a CW abbreviation for "calling". CQD DE MGY would seem to be the likely signal and this is confirmed on http://www.hf.ro/#trd

OK, so some signalling conventions of unknown vintage used CLG to mean 'calling'.
The only evidence that this was part of the distress call from Titanic was the cover of E&T, which is not noted as the most technically reliable publication on the planet. The original post indicated that jcoates couldn't find any reference to this sequence being transmitted by Titanic. If Titanic didn't send it, then what other (later) operators may have used the sequence to mean is irrelevant. Anybody got a 1912 Marconi wireless operator's manual? ------------------------- Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. |
