hi folks , in the process of preparing my application for a JIB electricians gold card and was wondering if ;
will being self employed be a disadvantage ? would getting a reference off a building surveyor i do work for help at all ? not nic or part p at this time , recently made redundant. any advise / thoughts welcome. |

Depends what qualifications you have and if you have a relevant NVQ3 (not level 3 qualifications which some people get confused with) If you dont have an NVQ 3 then you will not get an electricians card and the only card you would get is an improvers

Most Likely that they would grade you as an improver, as the ECS/JIB grading systme relies upon the practical elements of the AM1 and AM2 to achieve competency with your hands as well as the theory, just so you're not surprised, I have an engineer of 30yrs in the trade, one of the best sparks around IMO, and they will only give him the grade of maintenance electrician based upon his qualifications!!

This is ridiculous. This guy is an Approved Electrician which an engineering qualification. Nowhere in the ECS application does it say an AM2 is 'Necessary' especially for a guy like Biff55 who has a 2391. Not sure if being Self-Employed would be a disadvantage but I wouldn't have thought so as long as your reference checks out.
