I wouldn't worry what other people think and choose a job that interests you. You have to spend a very large portion of your life working and it would be better to concentrate on a career that would be more fullfilling to yourself than worry about wether or not it is regarded highly in society.
I have assumed the questioned was aimed more at career advice. |

It is almost close to choosing academic and the industry. If you are pursuing some special field that interest you and you have academic qualification to do so you may choose to go into the research area. This is the cutting edge of technology. However there is still plenty of room to achieve if you wish to start your career as a practising engineer. There is still opportunity to explore and innovate if you choose to take the initiative.
