Here's a question I bet you've heard a thousand times...

I've been considering changing career and retraining as an electrician for some time but I simply don't know where to start. Is there a "standard" basic qualification for electricians?

What types of things have you done so far in life? You need to be good with your hands (goes without saying), have a good memory, and be able to swallow a few books. Its a technical trade, so If you come from something thats similar, then might be worth a look. If you were on the other hand an estate agent or something, it might not be for you.

The current 'new' basic qual is CG2357 which will keep you busy for a few years, you might be able to sneak onto the previous 2360 if you can find anywhere that runs it. The real learning comes from working onsite with someone else to learn the ropes.
After that there is a never ending list of city and guilds numbers (that change every few years needlessly just to confuse everyone) to get through, up to 4467 at level 4.
