I see what you mean but one of the similar named sites was created in 1970 so do not blame them.

The Institute of Educational Technology (IET)

http://www8.open.ac.uk/iet/main/about-iet/history-iet

Also:

Information Engineering Technology (IET)

And:

Image Enhancement Technology Ltd (IET)

Then Army Guys SInging at IET Dinner Ft. Knox.

Could be the Technology bit that catched, do we really need it
Institution of Electrical Electronic & Mechanical Engineers would serve us better.
(IEEME), together with a proper matched engineering magazine.

The IET is aware of the other organisations mentioned which have similar initials. This is always likely when initialisms are short; for example the URLs for the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Shakespeare Company differ only by ".uk" (although it is pretty easy to determine which one is of interest by visiting their respective Web sites!)

At the time of writing, the BCS come second in a Google search on their initials to a share ranking for Barclays, for whom BCS is clearly the acronym used in the finance world.

However, I am pleased to confirm that anyone searching for the IET, as suggested in the original question, would be likely to see this site as the first result. Indeed, at the time of writing, in such a search on Google, four results appear from "our" IET before any from others.

I trust that this is of assistance.
