I have just received a very strange phone call asking if any of my colleagues or myself would like to attend an IET roadshow. When I asked what it was about the caller did not know apart from "I'm doing this on behalf of the Institute of Engineering and Technology so I guess it's something to do with designing electronics". I asked for more information and was told "that's all I have". When asked if I could call back with names of interested colleagues when I had more information I was told "I don't have an e-mail or an incoming phone line".

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I do apologise for the time it has taken for us to respond but we have been investigating the incident and after thorough checking across the organization we are not aware of anyone calling on behalf of the IET.We can only assume that the caller had not be instructed to call by the IET but by another intermediary. Clearly we will continue to try and trace this call, to make sure that our quality of service and communications is not compromised indirectly this way in future.

Please be reassure this is not part of any recruitment drive.

Many thanks for your reply. Interestingly the promised invitiation to this event never arrived - this really is most peculiar.

I wonder if it was a company fishing for names for sales / recruitment purposes? If so it was rather ineptly done.

I've got a pretty good suspician where this came from now, which was nothing to do with the IET. Hence rant removed from post above!

If I am right it was fishing for names for a recruitment agency.
