I received an email inviting me to inspect the new MyIET today. It does look much cleaner and much better laid out then the previous incarnation.

However...

you can search and contact other members using the search form - is there any way to opt out and make yourself hidden?

ditto on the public profile, is that any way to make that invisible?

MyIET seems to to have taken a "Linked In" type style (lets not get in to the discussion of the value in duplicating an already existing service). However, with Linked In I can choose to subscribe or not subscribe. With MyIET it would seem that the only way to hide my details is to not be a member!

(note; I don't actually want to be invisible on MyIET, but I think the option should exist for those that do)

Since in the forums profile options there are ways to block PM's and hide profiles, do these options duplicate MyIET settings, or are overriden by them?

You've done better than me.
First attempt to connect (using the link in the email) delivered an error box "Error retrieving markup for element cf_layoutareaactivitytab : There is no web application configured to service your request."

Second and subsequent attempts get me in, but as soon as I select an info tab I'm asked to verify myself. I type in my credentials (which appear worryingly greyed) and hit return. There follows any number of minutes while Firefox says "downloading", but nothing appears on screen.

Looking at the page source there's lots of stuff there, shame none of it displays.

Hi,

The search only includes people who have set up a profile and set them to be visible, so by default you're not included. We were mindful not to make presumptions about profiles and visibility and the search currently only includes people who created profiles in response to the pre-launch publicity campaign that we've been running.

On the Edit Profile tab, there are options on the right for visibility. You can set your visibility to Everyone, IET Members only, people on your Favourite Contacts lists only or entirely Hidden.

MyIET shares the same PM system as the forum as it makes sense to only have one and as the Forum has options for delivering things like subscription updates by PM. The intention is that it would be managed from within MyIET. The forum's already had some basic modifications done to link to MyIET for sending and reading PMs.

One thing that has changed is buddy lists; the old buddy lists have been discarded in favour of the new Favourite Contacts list in MyIET, but the number of people with buddly lists was quite small and the typical buddy list size was 1.

Thanks for the feedback. The new functionality in MyIET is part of the first phase on an ongoing project to improve community functionality, so there's room for us to gather feedback that can help guide the future phases, so please keep suggesting things.

Interesting you missed it on the right! It was originally underneath the profile form, but the group we used for testing missed it as it was below the fold so we moved it to its current location.

rar - I'm using Firefox myself and I have not seen that effect. Could you describe what (if anything) happens when the page is blocked? Do you get a blank page, an error, or something else?

Thanks for the suggestions.

You can get to the home page from any page on the site by clicking on the IET logo or name above it, both at top left.

You can get to the forums from the Activity tab in My IET. You can also go via any postings in your public profile there. However, the general point about quicker access to the forums has been made a number of times, and we will look at it again.

If you have a photo/avatar showing in your public profile, and you have checked the option to show it elsewhere, it should certainly show in the forums. We'll look into that for you.

rar: It may be your cookies. I've had something similar happen once when I'd had Remember Me set that was fixed by logging out then back in, so can you try that?

Thanks, but have you tried logging out (using the logout link next to MyIET at the top of the page) and then logging in again?

The idea is to destroy your log-in cookies and then log in again to create replacement ones. This sometimes resolves issues of corrupted log-in sessions/cookies.
