The staff shortages article on the main page, at the link below, says that nearly 120 HR heads were inteviewed. Why not also interview some well qualified engineers who cannot find work, to balance the article, as this may suggest that there are actually no skill shortages. My other point is why does it have to say 'nearly 120' interviewed? Was it 117, 118, 119, etc., and if so why not put that figure and keep things accurate.

Looking at the photograph in the article, I am assuming that the gentlemen in the photo, who are either mechanics or mechanical fitters, are being considered as "engineers", by the article writer.

It is a fine example of the generally poor standard of media and press writing and reporting these days whereby they survey an insignificant number of people, on one side of the equals in the equation, and then present that as some sort of general representation. On the basis of less than 120 HR people's opinions the article wants to suggest that "engineering needs 'radical overhaul' to address staff shortages".

With the current attitude of companies, they are digging their own grave because if they are not going to train people then there won't be any trained people to employ.

You may be interested to read the IET's latest skills survey Skills Demand in Industry 2009. The report shows a reduction in engineering recruitment and an easing of skills shortages experienced by employers.

With the current attitude of companies, they are digging their own grave because if they are not going to train people then there won't be any trained people to employ. That's ok for the company I work for, as all the engineering is going to be outsourced to India over the next few years. We have already been told by certain members of management that we should stop thinking of ourselves as Engineers, and thinking of ourselves as Project Managers. Last training I had was to learn about an internal system to release parts for the company. I used it once to release a part, then got locked out of the system. |

I thought that even if we are called "engineers", we were supposed to realise than we are "commodities" as well.

Last training I had was to learn about an internal system to release parts for the company. I used it once to release a part, then got locked out of the system. Maybe that part you released was actually the new code name for engineers and you released them and yourself as well.....LOL. Regards. |
