Guys,

Which one is more common for MV motor protection, Circuit Breaker or Contactor+Power Fuse?, from my experience, I never seen Circuit Breaker as protection for MV motor.

What you guys think?, are there any reasons why contactor more popular instead of circuit breaker for MV Motor?

In my experience it depends on the size of the motor and its functionality.

For smaller motors that are switched frequently such as feedpumps, a contactor is utilised. This will have fuses built into the truck to protect the cabling but also an electronic motor protection relay to protect the motor.

For larger motors that are switched less frequently, I have seen the use of breakers either with an electronic motor protection relay or a differential protection system.

Kind regards
