Hi Engineers,

I read this extract from a transformer manufacturer manual.

" Transformers which are required to be kept in storage for long periods should be preferably be drained of oil and the tanks should be filled wit h dry nitrogen gas under slight pressure"

Request you t ogive your valuable suggestions. Is this method appropriate or not advisable to follow?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Vj

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

The rationale is to avoid moisture ingress contaminating the oil which leads to all sorts of problems.

... normally the iron losses mean they are slightly warm even when off load in operation which helps keep moisture at bay. In storage you don't have this and natural temp changes will gradually introduce moisture which will be absorbed by the oil.....

Yes. The instructions are correct for storage. Normally the oil is drained to avoid ingress of moisture in it while not in operation. Nitrogen is a dry gas and helps keep moisture out of transformer.
