Most of the articles I read on this subject concentrate on measuring and allocating generation to possible consumers.
In my view, a smart grid needs to be able to stabilize the grid when there is a gale blowing into the windfarms at 3 in the morning. Surely the best way is to encourage off peak loads and install rapid reaction frequency control but please do not bore readers with complicated electronically created statistics on remote meter reading devices. I do agree. Many of the arguments are presented in this paper. http://www.davidhirst.com/elec...FrequencyPaperv06.pdf. But you do still need appropriate meters if you are going to share the rewards of co-operative behaviour. This need not be remote.

Surely we should be looking at demand side profiling and consumer education to enhance what we already have? Thus in turn ensuring the infrastructure can cope with the forecast of microgeneration and renewables over forthcoming years?
