We have old cable terminations which keep failing and quote us by surprise. is their any testing method which can give us warning once the detrrioation started.

How to they fail? Is it an insulation breakdown or overheating?
What is the voltage and current, what is the enviroment? |

If your cables are PILC (Paper Insulated Lead Covered), the terminations are probabely filled with bitumen. There are different grades of bitumen. Bitumen for cold climates will not set hard in a hot climate. Bitumen for a hot climate will crack in a cold climate. This is nothing to do with deterioration, just the temperature and grade of bitumen. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere and put this posting now, I suspect your bitumen is cracking. There is not much you can do about this except remake all the terminations using a different grade of bitumen. Best wishes John |

Thermal Infra Red scan, would be a good place to start looking at, from a preventative maintenance side of things.
Fluke, Flir and many others provide cameras, and can also be hired. Most cable types will work, although if its high voltage cable on a low voltage VFD, it will run hotter than normal. I have seen this in the water industry, so that smaller cables with better bending radii could be used in the compartment. Regards Derrick |
