Hi,

Did some current measurements on a main supply today L1 - 82A, L2 - 99A, L3 - 63A. Any ideas on how to get these balanced out. I know how, just want some more input on the matter and if any new ideas/ products/ suggestions crop up........
Thanx

Mr. Ablelectrical,

I assume that yours is a three phase FOUR WIRE system.

You will have to take a large number of readings for various times of the day and week. Then physical changes of loads from one phase to another, based on your judgement, alone is the solution.

You will not be able to have perfect phase balance always. But by proper selection, you can minimise the unbalances for various times.

Balancing depends entirely on the configuration of loads connected to each. I assume that the connected loads are mostly SP+N so if this is an existing installation it would be difficult taking the point raised bye rnairnp to determine whether there was an actual imbalance or just that the loads were being used at varying times creating a perceived imbalance.

If you can list all the loads and their current values and can change which phase they are connected to then this is the only way I can see to improving any imbalance there may be. I do not know of any devices etc out in the market for a quick fix

totaly agree on this, to find out if you have a real imbalance you need to record over a day / week to get an overall average.
you would also need to look at the standing 3 phase base load and then the single phase loads.

As an imbalance it is not bad have seen far worse.

Thank you for all the input. Looks like i'm stuck with ye good ol data logger and many hours with my faithfull clamp meter!! As far as imbalances go, yes i've seen worse too and that may just have been a particularly busy time of day and probably does not reflect the real consumption (which is where the data logger would come in). But let's say the readings are true - and based on the knowledge that a three phase meter reads at the highest current? - even being able to balance the loads by 10% still offers a substantial saving for the heavy consumers, no? Or maybe i've missed the boat....

The unbalance in loading is anticipated in design. Unless it impacts on the supply system parameters it is usually left alone.

There is no significant advantage in keeping the phases perfectly equal. Neither is there any gain in energy saving.
