I am trying to find a supplier of small permanent magnet alternators for use on micro-hydro applications. Power around 1 kW, speed around 1500 rpm. Such alternators are commonly used on small wind generators, but are designed for much slower speeds, and are typically mounted on the wind generator shaft. Similar, higher speed, units are used for portable petrol generators, but again are usually overhung on the engine shaft. I would prefer a free-standing unit with its own bearings, and preferably a weather-proof enclosure.
If anyone knows of a (preferably UK) supplier, I would be pleased to hear of one. Thanks, Alan Davies |

Hi Alan
We have been evaluating the Futureenergy PMG but our findings indicate that it is not capable of 1KW sustained output. We have partially or completely burnt out 3 or 4 of these units operating as a Wind turbine. They are very good people to work with but I think the product will soon be derated to say 800W. I may be able to supply an alternative more robust higher power PMG if you give me a better idea of the Spec re: voltage; peak power; average power, quantity, when required etc. Roger |

Just happened to notice your comments to Alan. I am also looking for a PMG. My requirements are as follows. Operating RPM -500 Max Voltage - 48V DC Peak Power - 3 - 10kW Average Power - 1-5kW Quantity - I am currently trying to design a turbine so initially I am looking for 1 only with a view to more obviously. I am also looking foran alternator for a prototype tidal mechanisim. I have about 100w of power (torque) placed upon an axil of about 60 rpm. Any advice or direction would be warmly appreciated. The testing of the tidal device itself has proven very encouraging. Can send short vid-clip.

I've just seen your message about PM alternators for hydro systems. I'm a PhD student at Imperial College working on small hydro and might be able to help with a PMA system appropriate to your needs. For hydro I guess you will be looking at higher rpm than wind and therefore the number of poles, turns and so on will be different to a wind system PMA. Hi all,
Just saw your comments for a PMG. I too am looking for a PMG or integrated starter alternator of the kind that is fitted to hybrid cars. The requirement is for a unit with a design speed of 3000 rpm, rated at 10 Kw approx, and that can be back driven as a motor. It is intended to attach it to a prototype turbine driven by an oscillating water column . Any suggestions for a supplier or manufacturer would be welcome. Gabriel. |

I'm looking for something similar, but at lower speed (300RPM), if you have any response could you let me know? I know two manufacturers: 1) Link removed/bin/e_eoliennes.html 2) Link removed/index.htm chinese manufacturer...
