Has anybody here had problems getting games produced in the Windows 98 and XP era to run on Windows 8? My son says that there are software incompatibilities with DirectX causing older software to crash or fail to execute. Windows 8 runs DirectX 11 but many games were written to work with DirectX 9.

Can Windows 8 be downgraded to DirectX 9 or should players of classic games continue to use XP? Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP in 2014 and hardware manufactured after then might not be able to run it.
