Hi!

I'm looking for a sensor which is basically just a roughly hand-sized capacitative touch sensor which registers touch or no touch. My dream would be to find something I can use for this which acts as a simple open/closed switch according to whether it is touched or not touched. Preferably with the minimum amount of extra component soldering necessary, so I can just connect it straight to my USB switch-interface box. I could just use an android tablet or something but I'd rather have to solder a little than have to learn how to interface to a tablet so it works as a switch. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Cheers,

Ben

Since no electronics professionals have replied, I will give a start...

I remember playing with open base transistor type touch switches in my youth. Wikipedia class this as a resistance switch, rather than a capacitance switch; perhaps it could be called an antenna switch?

Here is a simulation of the simple capacitive sensor touch switch in the link above:

http://easyeda.com/file_view_C...itch-01_XA60UcuMG.htm

The output of the switch is a 5V logic level that goes low when the sensor pad is touched and high when it is untouched.

The original circuit is by Wim Abuys and was published in elektor - 7-8/2008. A copy of the article can be found here:
http://www.hobbielektronika.hu.../getfile.php?id=82914

You can open the simulaton in the editor by clicking on the green pencil icon (Edit this file) and then do CTRL+R to run it.
