Got a call from a regular client today. Someone had been in at the weekend and made off with all the AC outdoor units, they just cut the pipes and cables.
So could i call round and "make safe". When i got there what really caught my eye was the state of the SY cable used to link to the internal units which virtually all of the clear outersheath was perished on all 17 units. what was left was very sticky .

I can only assume it was a reaction from the sun's uv.
I've seen SY used for this purpose dozens of times , but not so much lately, Perhaps this is why? i will have to ring Batt calbles just out of curiosity it see if SY is suitable for external use.

Has anyone else come across this?

I would have expected exposure to sunlight and in particular the UV portion of the spectrum to cause embrittlement and cracking rather than stickyness, but I suppose it could be plasticiser migration or some similar process?

I don't know why SY is seen so often on air con units, etc. The clear cover goes brown and brittle after a short time outdoors, it's not classed as an armour or any use as a CPC, so what's the point. Use Hi-tuf. Easy to install and doesn't go brittle. If you need armour use SWA.
