Hello, I have a 101 question for a guru...

Please refer to image below.

I have a high gage antenna wire that I need to re-attach to connector.
The wire has four parts: outer, metal braid, plastic insulator (not sure thats what it is) and finally the tiny wire itself.

The Question: is it JUST the tiny wire i stick into the hole and solder in? Any suggestions as to the right way to make the connection? (im going to solder)

doesn't seem image is setting...here is url: Link removed/images/wire.jpg

well this sucks.. i cant show image or like to it. stupid. please PM if anyone has a moment...thanks

This forum doesn't allow new posters to post links. It's to discourage the spammers selling their products.

Without being able to see what sort of connector you're talking about, I can only guess at an answer.

In most cases, where there's a centre core and a braided screen, the centre core goes to the centre pin of the plug, and the screen connects to the metal casing of the plug.

Welcome to the forum.

I am guessing from your "term high gauge antenna" you are not UK based? This forum concerns itself mostly, with some diversions, with UK fixed electrical wiring.

That said it sound like you have a co-axial cable that you wish to terminate in a plug. The central inner conductor needs to be terminated in the centre pin of the plug. The outer braid needs to be terminated in to the plug body. The inner core and outer braid should not touch and be separated from each other.

Hope this helps?

Vitamin,

I managed to view your link and the chances of reattaching that cable to that socket are very remote my friend.

You might be lucky enough to unscrew the back of the socket but you are going to need a very fine soldering iron and very fine cutters to achieve it.

(for the radio people on the forum, it looks like rg174 and a SMA socket (female)

I agree with Stu, it is a female SMA bulkhead connector. The wire is probably RG174. The connection to the centre terminal may be solder, but it may also be a crimped connection. Either way, it is unlikely that you will be able to re-use the connector. The centre terminal is an "interference fit" and "clicks" into position. They are almost impossible to remove once fitted, and are not held properly when re-inserted.

Regards,

Alan.

@ John... indeed, hailing from USA. Thanks for the input!
@slttle ... just did a google search and yep, RG174 & SMA femal socket looks to be about right...just having the terminology is of great help; i've been searching in the blind.

Think i found a video to get the ball rolling.

I know the likelihood of success is slim but I don't have much other choice. :/

Cheers for all the support guys.

Quoted to show image, looks like SMA connector, if indeed it is rg174 is it for a vehicle application?

Could the plastic shell be FAKRA ?

What colour is it ?
