This is simply the result of competition in the market place.
Being an old fuddy-duddy, I can remember when the ECA was the trade organisation for the larger electrical contractors and the NICEIC was for us smaller outfits. Introduce more players and the rush for a share of the same cake, causes all sorts of problems.
Banks, railways (public transport in general), health services and now even the TV services are taking turns to repeat the same programs on assorted channels. Now we even seem to be able to look forward to Sky programs on Ch 11 of freeview. Same format as BBCHD - watch trailers of what might be coming to a channel near you.
BT had to have competition, so lots of small companies entered the market, only to be bought out again and again. You know the result! (Water, Gas and electricity went same way!). Competition, what competition?

I would not think for one minute the tax payer would bail them. Out of curiosity I checked their accounts submitted to Companies House. In 2007 they had £4.3M cash in the bank and in their latest accounts (2011) they had £4041 which is a huge drop. The 2011 accounts showed them as being worth £7.6M so they clearly have some assets probably property so they are asset rich but cash poor.

The worrying thing is that they are still exposed to future losses at Lloyds for a couple of years but on the other hand may get some profits so no doubt they have their fingers crossed there are no huge disasters or plane crash claims to Lloyds!


I am curious to know if ECA members had any knowledge of these activities and the consequences?

John, It would be a crying shame to see another well respected company brought down by a 3rd party, with <£ 4500 in the Bank ......... Borrowed time me thinks, I know of other companies being asset rich and cash poor going to the wall as they were seen as a liability and the banks want their money.

As I said would be a crying shame but in the current ongoing market and the way the ECA collect their dues as a percentage of turnover and quite a few bigboys have gone to the wall then their market share and the way they raise money would have suffered also.

I am not convinced by the merger between the NICEIC and the ECA, I was so surprised when the ECA got involved with the ESC/NICEIC and became Certsure/Electrical safety register.


A £26 million loss so far, gambling on the Lloyds insurance market by a Trade Association, then when you take into account what else the Competence industry has done, is it any wonder that our trade gets angry.


It's all about Money not Safety.
