connected my mMegger 1553 to a live RCD today when had IR set and locked to test on, straight away pop and a small flash from probe.
Meter was showing >500 and fuse symbol and bleeping. Switched off and replaced internal fuse at battery compartment immediately but not resolved. Question is there internal PCB fuses that i have poped and easy replaced? ------------------------- Dougie Power Plus Electrical.co.uk My mission is to live as long as possible......so far so good! |

Yes there are internal fuses BUT opening the cover will invalidate the calibration, I had a similar fault where my fuse symbol would show, over voltage damages the soldered joints apparently, mine had developed a dry joint or similar and would not test anything, luckily for me my cal was up the following day so i opened it replaced the internal fuses but no joy.
I sent it for recal and repair - they repaired it for free! As it was a quick reheat. ------------------------- Regards Martyn. Only a mediocre person is always at their best www.electrical contractors uk.com |

Hello DOUGIE1000
From the symbols and sound you have described it would appear the internal protection fuse has blown. This device requires a specialist to replace. We can offer to repair the item or you may wish to contact a local authorised service center. Regards Megger Technical Support |

Hello megger,
Many thanks for your responce!! However after putting the 1553 back into van and continued testing on my spare test equipment the very next day I took meter into my local edmundson to sent meter away for calerbration and fuse repair, just this afternoon I got a quote from edmunson electrical wholesalers for a quote of £99+vat for 'repair to rcd and loop range the quote also says that if megger was to repair this then the cost would be £270. I'm not for a second doubting the repair however interested to know what happened? The meter has always been calerbrated nd other than battery compartment always been good to go. Yes sure I connected a dead test insulation resistance to a 240volt supply however with other metters do they not have satey for us stupid electricians? A costly mistake I won't do again, Ps appreciate Meter replying. ------------------------- Dougie Power Plus Electrical.co.uk My mission is to live as long as possible......so far so good! |
