A local contractor is paying his self employed lads £30 per day. that is the worst I have heard so far.
building services inspector post advertised for public body. £8.69 per hour. must have HNC.
Training company approached me to take an apprentice. he will be supplied free. no can do says I. We need to consider the future of the industry says he. Well, says I perhaps there are just far too many sparks. Perhaps it would be better for those in the trade if we had a moratorium on recruitment for several years. tough on the youngsters but something needs sorted before out trade goes headlong down the loo!

Out of interest what part of the country are you in. My lads need considerably more than that to survive.

Sadly my overheads come in at more than £30/ day, so I'd be better off staying at home.

That is crazy money. You would only assume the guys are working on the grip. I know sparks who are working for £7.50 an hour. their firm basically told them take it or leave it theres plenty more behind you who will take it. and they are right.

Utterly discrageful, youd tell them to get lost but weve all got bills, families etc. real tough times.

It's a typo, they've left off a zero.

Bet the company hourly rates to customers have not lowered.

I've seen agency offer rates as low as £10 per hr for electricians.

I've had two jobs recently, where the rate hasn't been very good, only £14 per hour.
On both occasions I started, only to discover that they were paying just 8 hours a day.
I left one at the end of the day, and the other before lunch, when the boss objected to me smoking during working hours.
What really ticked me off, was that the boss and two of his supervisors were stood in the smoking area having a fag at the time.
The guy I was working with, stayed on even though he smokes.
