Can you get two way dimmers? I want to dimmer some lights above a bed (to be used for book reading) and have a normal switch at the door to turn them off if the client gets up and is too lazy to talk back across the room.

Yes, most dimmers are two way.

Bear in mind that it will only come on at the dimmer setting when switched on by the switch

Stuy as you're on a roll: do you know of any devices that I can attach to a cupboard door so when it opens some lights come on. (No, I don't want a bathroom pull switch attached to the door )

You can get a door switch, it has a little plunger that goes in and out when the door is opened

Agreed, or it you want to get clever, reed switch and relay or prox switch (but that's possibly a bit OTT for a cupboard light)

I have an RF controlled dimmer in one of my kids rooms which would work nicely as a solution but it's not any good if you loose the remote in the duvet.

Yes, Dave, can't imagine it working, but have to ask. Having a dimmer one end and a switch the other is no big thing, client (Mum) just needs to decide on functionality.

I take it you can wire so that the switch activates depending on whether the doors are opened outwards or inwards?

If you do need to control the brightness from both locations then you can do it using one of the electronic dimmers, such as lutron or varilight where you have a master dimmer and a slave unit. I think they only need a 2-wire connection but I would use 3c&e anyway just in cast they got changed in the future.

Cupboard light, fit a pir light or a remote pir in the cupboard.

2-way dimmers from either end - use two momentary switches ( push to make not latching) connected in parallel to a Richmond dimmer unit or similar

I have two-way dimmers in my lounge. The center-lights can be switched on/off/dimmed from either the control by the hallway door, or the control by the front door. One is a "master" dimmer, the other is a slave which is basically a push switch. The "master" has a live in, an aux and a lamp out. The slaves connect between live in and aux. You can connect as many slaves as you want. I will post a link when I remember the manufacturer / supplier.

The dimmers I used were made by Danlers. The master units are available as either standard "leading edge" (part ref DSSGD) or "trailing edge" (part ref DQDGD). The slave units are part ref SSGS. The references I have quoted are for the ones that fit an MK grid module (which matched the sockets in the lounge). I believe they are also available in modules to fit crabtree or Eurodata grids too.

I think I got mine from tlc-direct, but I am sure there are other stockists too.

Thanks all I'm chuffed by your help.

I was thinking of using a Scolmore MIni-Grid (It's a usual multi-grid system.) Hoping that there New Media range which has single gang sockets, telephone outlets and such match so that I can mix and match my outlets near the floor.

Anyway, going off the point, does anyone know if Scolmore do Master-Slave dimmers? Can't seem to see any, might give them a tinkle in the morn.
