Chaps,
I'm retro fitting some Cat6 cable. It's quite a convoluted route so I don't have 100% control over proximaty to other services. As such I've opted for a screened cable. I don't have much experience of this type of thing so any help/advice would be appreciated. Is there a specific connector for use with screened pairs or is it just the standard RJ45? Many thanks, S |

Special connectors - note that there are at least two different types - FTP and STP. I suspect that you won't get the full benefit of the screening if it's not earthed - which would mean shielded patch leads and equipment (at at least one end) too.

its really not necessary to use shielded cat anything cable these days
But, if you do, you have to use special faceplates, patch leads and patch panels. usually easy to identify by the metal can around the connector. its also a lot thicker and stiffer to install. Id consider carefully before going to the extra expense, especially considering the end user wont buy shielded patch cords |

unless its taking a route via the interior of a microwave oven, then its pointless but follow the clients spec

Just a thought - it is for ethernet etc isn't it? It's just that I've come across some "networked" heating control systems that specify FTP cabling - presumably because they don't use proper differential sensing some of benefits of twisted pairs is lost.
