I've had smells described in lots of ways before, but kippers is a first for me.
A near neighbour collared me one morning this week and asked if I could have a look at his electric shower, he said it gave off a smell just like kippers when he had his morning shower.
Too busy this week to look, so passed it onto someon else.

Urea Formaldehyde has a distinct fishy smell when heated - some makes of terminal blocks supplied to OEM, and the switch terminal insulation in the back of pull switches are a similar material.

Showers may also have a "plate" of similar material behind the terminal blocks.

I'd suspect a loose terminal getting hot

The thing about water is that after heavy rain, floods and high tides the water can take on quite strong distinctive odours, its more noticeable in coastal areas during high tides, when I lived near the sea after a high tide the water had a strong beach smell for a few days.

But I suspect as OMS pointed out it is more likely a loose terminal in the unit unless you had a kipper factory down the road that got washed out.

This is usually a sign that it is likely to go up in smoke if it is continued to be used do to a loose connection.

Always advise that the circuit is isolated immediately as this can occasionally cause a fire within the shower unit!

That's the same smell you got when Mrs put a 100W bulb in an enclosed glass shade a la 60's....

LOL No not so much these days, do the very occasional gig with Joey the Lips but busy at work and my water activities.

Did have the offer a while back for another 17 party nights with a Blues Brothers type band from Plymouth, but cant be A**** with it as it gets a bit boring same old party stuff night after night.

Are you still spinning those discs!! ?

I suspect 'water activities' up North will have some different connotations though!!. LOL
