Looking to get a self levelling laser line - bosch do them but price is from 35 - 350 pound, anyone got a suggestion for a decent one under 100 pound......... Thanks

I have tried a few of the cheaper levels, all a waste of time but I live in hope, use once and throw away. Not yet felt the need for anything better as I have a very good water level and a chalk line. If it was good enough to build the pyramids it is good enough for me.

I would also recommend the Dewalt one DW088K-Dewalt Professional Self Levelling Cross line Laser.

If you put in the corner of a room you can get a line on all 4 walls at the same time

I use a TUV Laser with tripod. Dirt cheap and does a reasonable job. Good for aligning kitchen sockets and other accessories that need to be fixed at the same height.
With most equipment used on site, as long as you take reasonable care of it, it will give longish service, certainly beyond its warranty period.

I've had no luck with 3 lots of sub £100 ones.

The DeWalt one above is good for it's price - a colleague has one. Easy to set up and fairly rugged.

A builder buddy has an all-singing one for larger site work which is great but costs £x00s and is a PITA to set up.

The DeWalt is good for one room jobs, and beats the cheaper ones in strength of beam and accuracy.

Ive got a PLS180. No where near £100 but its the nuts. Size of a chocbox, magnetic clip for steel, single screw fixing for masonary.

Well, going against the grain, I have a Forge Steel self leveller from Screwfix, and, for the limited times I've used it, find it fine. Usually lining up spotlight holes, and getting kitchen units level in big kitchens.
Was £75 when I bought it, I see it's now £55.
I've not used it for a year, so was going to ebay it, if you are local to Leicester, you can borrow it and see what you think.

I've gone back to using a chalk line for downlights (with no chalk in it so as not to mess up the ceilings!) and find it quicker and more effective, a couple of drywalls at the furthest lights with the (no)chalk line around them.

However, the customer ALWAYS loves to see the laser out, especially when it's on the cross level setting even though it's totally unnecessary!

Ifyou are just using it to spot heights of sockets/plateswitchesetc then I find they can be a pain to set up and rely on line of sight which can be a pain.

It is far easier and cheaper (and a damn sight more accurate) to use a water level.

Don`t buy one , make one.
A length of tube 8mm min inside bore.
and a bucket as a reservoir .
Easy one man operation and spot on even if you dont precisely align the tube.

(you`d probably have change left over from a farthing LOL).
Easier and not rely upon line of sight and it is far more accurate.

I have a leica Lino L2+, it really is the business I bought it with the tripod, it was £172.00 from laser measure. My only regret is I did not buy the fixed pole.

The builder I do some work with bought the leica L2 with pole at the same time, we wanted to test both, the l2 was advertised as being able to project a square on the floor, which most other brands cannot do, my L2+ does not have that feature but if you know how you can! I demonstrated it to the Leica rep he was shocked!

The upshot of our comparison was but a L2+ with tripod and pole+ other brands don't even come close.

I have no affiliation with Leica, just a satisfied customer.

Bought the Dewalt one mention. Excellent and tough. Used it recently lining up some lights. Haven't a tripod so put rested it on drill box with a couple of wads of A4 and bob's your uncle.

I bought a Makita self levelling laser for about £125 - very good, I had a cheapie one before (nicked) but the new one is very clear & I'd recommend it.

FatMax clli laser level and 2.7mtr pole kit review:

So far only been used in my kitchen for setup and check was working before being used to do a kitchen sockets tomorrow.

Structurally sound, the laser seems pretty solid and robust. The pole a little footery and setting an exact heights might be a bit of a pain, laser manages to send a good clear red line a cross my kitchen and living room, about 6 meters and laser line is still tiny and line has not got fatter further away itis.

The laser comes with 3 massive sets of instructions and to be honest wasent even looked at in any way. The self magnet seems to be good and solid.

Good points:
long battery life,
Pole is spring loaded keeping pressure on pole to keep it in place,
Laser good clear easy to use buttons,
Price £70+vat


Bad points,
Bag it comes with is just that, a bag only and I could see it being damaged in back of some vans,
For ceilings the width isn't quite there and to mark on ceiling the pole will need to be used to bring laser close to ceiling and not left on. Floor for example,
The width could not really be tested as was in my own kitchen but from 90degree corn or of room seemed to hit all walls but hard to tells because of my kitchen layout.

Will know better tomorrow when setting a line in a kitchen fitting all the galv boxes.
