I have nothing against the use of popular emoticons that might help put a post in context, but when replying to messages wouldn't it be helpful to also have a drop down menu that included relevant symbols for things like Ω, ², ³, etc?

Any other suggestions for symbols to replace the existing emoticons?

ps. re the votey thing above, wasn't sure how it worked, thought I cancelled it!

Where is the tick box for "couldn't give a monkey's"?!

I'm not trying to be flippant, but I honestly don't mind either way. I don't use emoticons, not because I don't want to, I just never have so don't. I also probably wouldn't use a drop down menu of symbols. By the time I'd remembered wher to click to find it, scrolled through the options to find the one I want, I'd probably have written the word and be half way through the next sentence!

To each there own and all that, I am neither offended nor enthraled!

I still haven't figured out how to produce rt, sq, power, Greek symbols etc.
It used to be accessed by typing in the extended ASCII set with the Cntrl held while typing the necessary numbers on the RHS numerical keys. Not so now....

Hi dick, to be honest I am not sure where the box you require is other than just dont relpy, (though I'm grateful for the input anyway ) , but pleased to say that so far there is a 100% positive input to my suggestion! so far

I believe there are some clever codes you can type to get symbols, I have resorted to googling the symbols and copy and pasting them which can be time consuming, other times its a case of just jotting down some figures and hoping for the best interpretation - for a common example typing I2 instead of I² can be pretty misleading!

How about the abillity to post pictures direct rather than a link, sometimes a picture will show the problem quicker that a 40 word description.

On Microsoft Windows, one relatively easy way to get obscure characters is the Character Map. It's usually well hidden on the Start menu, under "system tools".

Well, I've tried that a couple of years ago and ended up with something else. I tried it again and when I copy/paste the Ohms symbol I get 'W'. So nothing has changed.
and
' L' should have been

Wierdbeard,
'Alt' numbers don't work either, well, not on a laptop.

I've just remembered something, one of the moderators gave feedback on this sometime ago and said that it couldn't be done due to the limitations of the forum software.
I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.....

I'm learning all the time, tonight I've been trying to sort out email on Microsoft Office 365 and a man phoned me from America on behalf of Microsoft to explain what I was doing wrong, now that's what I call service!

I hope you didn't give him any personal information Andy, are you sure he was connected with Microsoft and not one of the scammers? I and several of my friends have received calls saying that they're from Microsoft and have detected a problem with out computers and we need to give them some details. When I get these calls now I tell them that I know it's a scam and the call is being recorded and forwarded to the local police fraud investigation team, a recent reply from the supposedly Microsoft rep. was "oh you go to hell then"! (not quite wht i'd expect from a Microsoft representative!)

That was the first place I looked but to no avail.

I played around with different character sets and codes but it was when i changed from the adobe fonts to the windows fonts that the character map symbols worked

βΩϯΦΘϢϢΨΣф‡℃⅔∆≄√∜⌐♡Ⓒ - TT fonts

W Y b å f ã Æ » p - O Fonts

back to

Θ π Δ ± Ω ϖ ∑ ≠ √

"man phoned me from America on behalf of Microsoft "

I was fighting a battle with the email linked into BT website, I put in a service request not really expecting a call from Microsoft, anyway it was genuine as he told me it was a problem BT would have to sort out!

Anyway try opening Microsoft Word and type:

=lorem(3,2)

then press enter and you end up with:

"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Maecenas porttitor congue massa.
Fusce posuere, magna sed pulvinar ultricies, purus lectus malesuada libero, sit amet commodo magna eros quis urna. Nunc viverra imperdiet enim.
Fusce est. Vivamus a tellus."

Now there's useful!
