I had an experiance recently, also regarding Sri Lanka.
Some one had tried to order " Drugs " unsure what type from my personal account, thankfully it was only £25.00 and Barclays alerted me to the transaction. The first thing I did was to cancell that card and request a new one, just to minimise any further risk / exposure. I allways pay for fuel by card and only purchase from one station, that way anything happens I know, I use paypal for any online transaction say from an new supplier. I think we are lucky (ish) at this end of the country as we dont have a massive problem with skimming, but I know it is coming sooner or later. And only one cash machine locally has been targeted. Maybe they entered your room after you fell asleep, and made a clone of your card. If I was you I wouldnt use that tooth brush again. Some years back when I was living in Aldershot. I would buy the odd thing in a corner shop closed to where I lived. They didnt speak much English and aways had strange music playing loudly in the back ground. I always paid cash except on one occasion. Two days later I get a phone call from bank my card had be used in America. The card was in my view the whole time, Allah knows how they did it. Phew! that was horrid! that is something of a great mystery to me, these days, it's hard to feel secured. What surprises me though is the fact that you kept your card with you, How on earth could they possibly did that? |

Whilst I loathe Santander for lying about their "free business banking forever" I have to admit that their fraud detection is very good. I have just cancelled my business account with Santander... they want to charge £12 odd per month... Nation Wide were red hot on their CCs system... always quick to call and they have the OSC or summit like that for when you add a new account to their system they send you a text. BTW, I called Virgin and spoke to someone in Africa I believe... wasnt too bad... read between the lines to be honest... but she told me that all of Virgin cards now have the radio signal thingy on the top of all CC's so anyone stealing it / find it can go anywhere and use it to the tune of £15 per use... how daft is that... I ask you?????!!! So I will be changing this to another CC very soon... so you too have been warned! She did say that they will refund any monies lost but when I replied that I have to prove that it wasnt me she actually laughed!! regards.... Tom and... relaxxxxxxxxxx!

I wouldn't worry - it'll have all the same old s**t on it Never mind X factor - look at the state of the nation Good to see that you weren't totally rinsed by the skimmers anyway regards OMS ------------------------- Failure is always an option |

I had someone try to open a bank account pretending to be me. Unfortunately for them I am registered with CIFAS (I have to show photo ID for any credit agreement etc) and they were stopped. I am very careful with all my data, I never give the correct DOB except to those who definitely need to know, no personal info on facebook or anywhere else, restricted data on electoral roll. No loyalty cards.
There is no point in making it easy for them. I am just reading a slightly interesting book about the use of massive databases to determine what we buy, when and where so they can predict virtually anything. This data also gets sold around the place to others doing the same. So although they will always say it has been anonyomised I am not always convinced given the "mistakes" that are so regularly being made. They are watching you. |

There's anonymous and anonymous - I recall a debate a while ago where medical data was being sold on to drug companies. The NHS insisted it had all been anonymised and couldn't be tracked down to individuals. Someone pointed out that what they'd done was replace names/addresses with just post-codes. He happened to live in a rural area and his was the only house in his post-code area.Together with the gender information (also in the data set) anyone could easily distinguish between him and the only other person in that post-code (his wife). A little reading of the goings on in and around Bletchley Park and their methods of "gardening" intercepts give you an idea of the huge amount of valuable information that can be gathered even before the message is decrypted. - Andy. |

One of the examples, now a few years old, in the book related to America where from large datasets they were able to derive with a high degree of accuracy a persons race, gender and religion in order to determine if the person had been discriminated against! It is quite frightening if you are concerned about your privacy. The idea of postcodes being anonymous is one I have come across before, mine only has two houses on it so it is not difficult to extrapolate to personal information.
I have had to change credit cards twice due to inadvertent publication of their details on the net by supposedly secure responsible organisations (including Which). I opened an account with Sainsbury's bank some years ago. I was not happy with the poor security questions being asked, complained and got a standard letter from a woman in Edinburgh. Using my wife's genealogical websites and the web I was able to tell her where she lived and what her interests were. Whether it was down to this or not the security questions are now much less guessable. While I am not paranoid, I am getting there. |

90% of my work is on Petrol filling stations Inspection and Test, I can tell you now i find all sorts of strange gear under the counter that i know shuld not be there. We have been told by all the major oil companys to report this to them. And your right its always at stations run by our dusky friends.
I have had 2 cards cloned in the past and now have a pay as you go card, ok you pay i little for the service but i just top up with £50 to £100 depending on if i'll need to get diesel while i'm out and all my online payments are with paypal if the company dont use paypal i don't deal with them full stop |

I got done by a petrol station! They took me to my overdraft limit in malaysia, luckily they literally only got a few pounds as I was almost at the limit anyway! It only takes an almost invisible inline plug in device on the card reader cable and a "security" cctv camera to note your PIN to do the dirty on you! I went to cash for a good while after the incident but due to easyness have now lapsed back into the old ways of card payment, but ALWAYS COVER THE KEYPAD with my wallet whether it's tesco's or a corner shop.
