Been asked to supply new supply to a garden shed 20m away from house. The customer doesn't want the garden digging up. There is an existing catenary wire about 8ft up across the garden which they'd prefer to do away with which originally had pvc t&e attached. Any suggestions.

Wireless? Lol, surely people aren't that dense to realise cabling of some description has to be involved-mind you............. ------------------------- Those who make no mistakes do very little work!!...... |

SWA either cleated to a fence or laid on surface if there's a garden or flowerbed area next to the fence, although as theres a catenary already in place i'd try and get them to use that, I done one recently like that using Hi-Tuff,

I'd always thought it was bad practice to lay swa on the surface, but who knows I may be wrong.

At least you know it's not buried 1" under the surface during soil turning season!.

Supply to shed not underground or overhead? Generator?
Got to get a cable there somehow! Cleated to fence? just above ground level |

Now Tesla was into wireless power distribution, but somewhere on the way we lost the recipe.

A bit of diversity is in order.
I'd go for a combination of Solar PV, Wind Turbine and build a small reservoir on the roof and use all this rainfall to run a small hydroelectric pant. That'll keep the batteries charged ------------------------- "I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something". - Richard P. Feynman |

------------------------------- I just knew someone would say that but my view is that i'd rather people can see it than it be just below the surface as Rulland said. I've shown several such jobs to niceic assessors and expected adverse comments but nothing's ever been said, Dave. |

And how many of us will have access to one of those BOD?

Trenching / impact moles can be hired in from many Plant suppliers but you will still need to dig an entry and exit pit.
It will also depend upon the ground you are attempting to bore through. I always remember the DNO trying to mole up the side of drive of my parent's house, the mole got 2M hit a rock and doubled back on itself and smashed its way through a clay drain pipe. The size of the trench they had to dig to recover it totally negated digging a trench in the first place! Kind regards Donald Lane |

I suspect he was more interested in the sellotape wrapped round the twist connector joints I can sense this ones going downwards...... i would just simply tell them they have four options
1 use the exisiting catenary wire 2 install a new catenary wire but make it higher 3 dig the garden up, let them dig the trench so they can decide if they wanna go straight across the lawn of dig the flower beds up 4 dont do the job, it sounds like its half a days work tops, surely you are not that hard up for work that you cant afford to turn down a £200 job |

as per Dave69, but catenary wire to boundary line out of site, along boundary line and then into summerhouse/shed from behind on a catenary out of sight.......

I spoke to the NIC boys this morning who said that laying an swa across the ground is not acceptable nor fixing it to a fench although there are no specific regs, its a matter of what are the risks and interpretation. So some of your guys have had pretty nice inspectors. I think I'll pass this one up; it's not worth the hazzle.

If they only want a light, then PV could be the answer.
If they want power but only on rare accaisions, not regulary then consider a generator. Otherwise, as above. |
