As I have the digital BS7671, which uses VitalSource as its viewing platform, I was browsing the other ebooks available from VitalSource and found quite a few wiring related publications by Brian Scaddan and others.

However, you can only buy these with a USA or Canadian credit card. They will not sell to the UK direct.

So the VitalSource platform which the IET uses for viewing the Regs cannot be used by us for any other books - unless they are available from distributors within the UK, which I doubt.

This seems to be an unfortunate choice of partner.

Yes Mike I found the same. By the way can you access your regs books online? I don't seem to be able to, just get a mainly blank screen when I log in to see "my books".
Any clues?
regards
Marc

Marc.
I can access mine but they are stored on the hard drive. You don't have to be online at the time.
If you send me a screen shot of the web page I'll see if I can show you what to do. Send it to morourke@iee.org

Sorry Mike, let me clarify.
I can view my books on my PC as I have downloaded them as per Bookshelf. You are supposed to be able to access the books from any PC online according to the IET website. So if you're away and don't have your own PC you can access the books for which you have licences via any internet connection.
Thanks
Marc

I couldn't get access either. Just had a long online chat with VitalSource. They say it is the publisher which is preventing it being seen online. They say online access has expired.

That's a pity, I thought I could join a group who between them purchased all the copies saved onto a server, and could all view them online within rules of copyright. Oh well. I like having a book anyway. It just feels more "right"!

I just found the brochure which states that you can access the regs online.
http://electrical.theiet.org/w...ions/digital/faqs.cfm
I have written to Sales to ask them why it is not accressible. Perhaps they will post the reply here.

When I had a trial of the software you could access the publications online. I didn't buy the software because the software doesnt render the text in an easy to read format.

Mike,
"Perhaps they will post the reply here"
Call me a pessimist, but perhaps more likely they won't. Anyway I'd love to know if you do get a response. I use the ebook as a teaching resource and several people have bought it/them on my recommendation, I am almost guilty of mis-selling if it doesn't do what it's supposed to!
Regards
Marc

Teesdale, it doesn't print too well either, a deliberate ploy I suspect using a low resolution or something to deter printing. You are of course allowed by license to print from it but it's terrible if you do.
So I'm probably a cynic as well as a pessimist

From end of September 2012 the IET will offer customers the opportunity to purchase selected individual Wiring Regulations related IET books to complement the existing Vitalsource Bookshelf packages. Other relevant titles will be added over time. We will contact customers in due course to alert them to this.

All books on the Vitalsource Bookshelf platform are available both in download and online mode. Anybody who cannot access the online version should please contact Liz Wooderson at wiringregsdigital@theiet.org, or Tel: 01438 765533.

David,
Thanks for your reply, it seems that there are several other possibly useful books "in" VitalSource, but they cannot be bought from the UK, would you know anything about this please?
As has been suggested this seems an odd alliance when there are other digital publishing means out there UK based and where you are able to purchase books in the UK, with solid DRM available.
Could yourself or Liz comment please?

I have installed VitalSource and got it stable on 2 devices (PC Win XP & iPad) as I am seriously considering the digital regs publications.

I have 'lost' my digital regs package!

I replaced my PC, downloaded the VitalSource software and [apparently] successfully registered my new machine. But no sign anywhere of the books.

I've just been on the technical helpline, but they say no books are registered to my email address!

So now I'm waiting for a response from the IET.

I too have have been considering this option for a while. However, since I don't get paid for test driving this stuff, I thought I'd hang on a bit until the teething problems had been ironed out.

I remember that the CD version allowed a maximum of 4 pages per print run and that was a fair copy, however, I prefer that my my new car had four wheels and something to adjust them when turning corners before making a purchase !
