Sorry to hear about the bad luck - just out of interest, do you know the client who called you out - what was the fault.

Given that you don't usually use that van - well............................

wtf,,,,,,, why do we bother with insurance???????
ive just spent a good half an hour on the phone with be wiser who the van was insured through and they have just told me my insurance will go up by at least £300, even though i am not going to claim, they say as I have had a van stolen and burnt out i am now a higher risk and the small print says my tools etc are not covered as the van was stolen and not my tools stolen from the van, next time i think i will just leave the back unlocked, Needless to say i told them where to stick their insurance and they said no problem if i want to cancel, they will just charge me £300 cancelation fee, dam good when my annual premium is only £320

do you ever feel like you are just banging your head against a brick wall????

the clent is a sort of friend, i have been using the escort for a couple weeks now, my son normally uses it, but when the Vivaro got hit i loaded all my gear into the van as well, so basically i've lost one very Comprehensive set of cordless tools, hand tools and test gear plus one good set of tools

The fault was they could not reset the fire alarm panel

To say my jaw dropped seeing your photo is an understatement.

And then the runaround with insurance.

You must feel so aggrieved.

I've had a similar gobsmack with insurance, but this time house related, a couple of years ago.

They're thieving toerags themselves.

No consolation but are you now thinking of deterrents? Why spend lots of dough on tools and don't take the steps to protect them.

I have a TOAD alarm from ebay that I hard wired myself, this has interior movement sensors, and a remote fob for setting and monitoring all alarm functions such as doors opening etc., the transmission range depends on obstacles, but the warning labels and the loud alarm, should prevent the barstewards from funding their drug habit.

I hate hearing about stuff like this, makes me sick.

I've had a considerable amount stolen in the last couple of years, off sites. Just leaves you feeling bitter and throughly F++++D Off.

Chin up. What goes around comes around, those b+++++ds will get theirs.

Is that a hole drilled below the door lock in the photo? If so it is a standard method of opening up a lot of cars used by thieves. The burning of the car is done to destroy all traces of DNA and fingerprints.

If you have a van get security locks fitted to all the doors and grills to rear windows and a bulkhead as a 1st step and then fit an imobilser /alarm if not already fitted. Oh yes and use them even if you leave the vehicle for a microsecond.

You have my sympathies

The lawmakers and the courts do not seem to appreciate the great sense of loss and frustration these criminals leave in their wake

This type of crime is now considered as low priority and the consequences for the low life is minimal,I hope good fortune comes next for you

Hopefully a tale to cheer you up!

Some years ago I was working on a site of new houses in Kidderminster replacing the old Territorial Army base on the Birmingham Road. Tony a electrician took some tools out of his mini van and carried them into the house where we were working, when he went back out his van had gone.

A driver delivering sand on a tipping wagon had released the tail gate then started to reverse down the road, the mini van was too small to see in his mirrors, it was shunted all the way down the site and then a full load of sand tipped on top of it.

Needless to say everyone thought it was funny apart from Tony who loved his mini van.

Dave this is terrible for you. As you know I had my van cleared out last year and I too am a Makita fan. And Hilti.

If you have any receipts or serial numbers then you can register them with some manufacturers as stolen ( and the police) who will notify you if ever anything comes in for repair. It is a very long-shot and I have never heard but it could happen one day. The police list is worth doing, they continue to contact me if ever they get anything like any of mine in from various local 'raids'. My name and number are also secreted inside the battery compartment of the beloved Fluke ( serial number 8811067) maybe one day it will come home.

But let me put this horror into perspective for you; I've had my three things lately; I nearly got shot whilst out for a gentle stroll, I nearly came a cropper in the van when my shoe lace got caught round the brake pedal, and then I got 'Nat Wested' this weekend which is ongoing stupid hassle.

Then the fourth and there are not supposed to be four; My proper untransitional friends are all men except one. My only close girl mate, Hilda, 44, stunning,. took a massive and unexpected overdose yesterday. Sent me two warning texts during the afternoon and my phone is locked away when I am at the design job because it is a secure environment. I was too late. She is in a deep coma and I have just come in from spending a day at the bedside. Glasgow scale 3 >24 hours. Not good but I can wish as good as the rest so I'm wishing.

Yours is horrible but I'll trade yours for mine today Dave. You do kind of get over losing material stuff, I've been there and you do get over it.

Come with us to Elex, do it on a Friday when the stands are selling cheap because they are too lazy to load stuff back into their trucks, and then stand back, leave me alone, and let me do your tool-testing and bartering for you. I'm not exactly an aurora dolly bird but I sure as hell can use an SDS into the chunk of brick they offer, and talk breathlessly about torque I still haven't replaced 1 x hilti SDS and the charger because I paid less than half that at a tool fair at 3pm on a Friday, so I am waiting.

I am curious about the call-out. Don't know why but it makes my hackles go up. A set-up?

You'll be alright pal.

Zs

Might be gone for a while pending looking after H. Catch you later.

As ever Zs - you kinda have a way of putting things into perspective.

Dave69 - you cannot win with insurance - but hours spent checking the small print is always worth it.

The worst part of my day - pulling all my tools off the van into the house and vice versa - so unnecessary - they should be safe behind a simple lock but sadly they are not. I'm tempted to try working out of an old estate car with a decent load cover as few expect it to have gear in whereas most expect a van to have gear in.

Mind you have twice had the car sprung open and ransacked looking for cash mobiles satnavs etc whilst on the drive in the middle of the day. Doubtless opened with an electronic zapper. Thankfully no damage done and nothing taken - but just so annoying - but at least now they'll find themselves on my CCTV.

Agree with Zs's hackles about the call out.

You don't half, Zs. From a few different experiences of mine I can guess a bit of what you must be going through - my thoughts are with you both.

Why tell us who this insurance company is so that we can avoid them as they do seem to be quite poor!

Not just yours! We all learn by our experiences and of others. What will you now do, in an attempt to avoid a recurrence? What will other posters now do?

Got to watch out! my cousin had his van done over while doing a quote.

Seems he may have been pre-booked to have his van done over sort of thing!

In some parts I always take the wife or son just to sit in the van while I work... Some times I take the wifes car to quotes so the van is not left !!!!

Know the areas you want to work in and those you dont!

Sorry to hear of your loss

well i am just getting even more p1ssed off, my van was caught on the towns cctv, well the rear of it, so still no idea who was driving it, but it shows the rear window glass had been removed, so now the police say the only reason the van was stolen was because the ass holes couldn't get into the back quick enough so they just took the van, that would explain the dents and holes that had been drilled in and around the rear door lock. As i said i had fitted a simple bolt operated by a soleniod that inhibited the rear lock from moving. I'd always thought no one could get into the back of the van without making a lot of noise and causing a lot of damage and now i have been proved right.

it now seems the same people broke into a car and van about 45 mins earlier that were both parked in a tesco car, i mean ffs that was 8 o'clock in the evening in a busy superstore car park.

I'm think of welding a tool vault into the back of my Vivaro, but i still have to find a way to stop them just taking the van
