Good evening, all;

I'm planning to apply to study Electronic Engineering at university this year, and am currently studying for my A2 exams in June. My predicted grades are fine, but I'm lacking in prior work experience.

I understand that employers are feeling the pinch due to economic troubles and, as such, are unwilling to take on volunteers let alone full-time workers. I've tried looking for short placements in an industrial setting, but have been unable to find anything.

What could I do, or where could I look, for a work placement? I would be grateful for even a day's worth of experience.

Thank you for reading, and have a nice day.

Electronic Engineering; Electrical & Electronic Engineering; Electrical & Electronic Engineering with Mathematics, a BEng course

A common theme of Electronic Engineering - at middling universities for the subject: York, Cardiff, Nottingham, Essex, Sussex

You should not require work experience to undertake those courses, only the required entry qualifications. With regards to work experience in the course itself look at each university and find out what they offer within the course. Some universities have arrangements with local businesses and so can organise paid work placements and others do not. So check each university in detail and do not assume that just because the course is the same all the other related aspects will be the same.

Here is an example, but for two general engineering courses:

This is the key statement "Engagement with industry is a key feature of the course which is supported by local engineering employers through the Northants Engineering Training Partnership (NETP)." which means they can organise work placements.

"In stage two, a number of students are offered a 12-month paid work placement in a local company through the Northants Engineering Training Partnership (NETP)."

Regards.

You've got the right approach in terms of looking for work experience as well as getting a degree. The Year In Industry scheme can offer a gap year type work placement:

If there is a particular company you like the look of, I wouldn't be afraid to directly contact them.

There seems to be an unfortunate concept called the 'unpaid internship'. Thankfully, I haven't seen this encroaching into the engineering industry yet. All the students I've seen doing work placements have received modest payment.
