hi all
i am planning on taking up MSc in building services engineering (preferably electrical and sustainability concentrated) on a distance learning mode. i have shortlisted few of them : 1. MSc built environment from Heriot Watt University,Edinburgh 2. MSc building services engineering from Brunel University Is anyone out there doing any of the above mentioned or any other similar courses in the respective universities or any other universities, on a distance learning/full time/part time mode, who could advise me on few of my queries? i am finding it quite dubious on deciding which one to take up!!any other uni or course suggestions? thanks, sanam |

You could try the sustainable electrical engineering with Lighting MSC at UMIST - try here

Hi Sanam,
You may also want to have a look at: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departm...s-technology-msc.html Regards ------------------------- "Excellence is the ability to do ordinary things, extraordinarily well." thanks guys
firstly the loughborough university doesnt have distance learning option for the course that you have mentioned or any other similar courses. the only options i have got till now; MSc on a distance learning mode are the following: 1. MSc sustainable electrical building services engineering from manchester university - very good course, awesome modules, precisely the thing im looking out for but too expensive when compared to the corresponding ones in other unis. it costs 9737GBP!!!(1107GBP per module) Link removed/?code=04412&pg=1 2. MSc built environment from heriot watt university - which is really flexible as in they give a choice of 8 modules from about 20 modules that cover bldg services, sustainability, project management, etc. it costs 895GBP per module. it has got a campus in dubai as well (which is the closest place to where i live) Link removed/prosppgrads/bepg.htm 3. MSc building services engineering with sustainability from brunel university. this is also equally good as the second option plus it costs only 465GBP per module. Link removed/editor...ergy+msc/full+details now the confusion is which one to pick from these? are there other options i dont know of as yet? cheers! Edited: 14 October 2008 at 07:19 AM by sanam |

Well I suppose it depends on what you want - if sustainability is your bag the Oxford Brookes do a distance learing MSc in sustainable building design, Welsh School of architecture have several MSc's covering building modelling, environmental design etc. I think South Bank also do a distance MSc in Building Services. Additionally you could try the LET lighting Diploma from SBU and link that to CIBSE/SLL diploma courses. Plenty out there at the moment - perhaps a few hours google bashing might be the order of the day. Regards OMS ------------------------- Failure is always an option |

well, i have checked out the SBU and their courses. apparently i was told that they no longer hav the distance learning MSc.
i am more keen on doing MSC in sustainable building services engineering rather than a diploma. thanks! |

What about this
As a building services engineer, I would argue that sustainable building services is somewhat of a contradiction in terms - we actually need less rather rather than more of them. What we really need is building physiscists who can guide the architects in a holistic manner to maximise the building potential What you need to be aiming at is how to eliminate the need for services in the first instance through the form and materials of a building - only at that point should you consider the most efficient use of servies to modify the environment. As for the lighting diploma. I was suggsting "as well" rather than "instead of" Anyway, good luck whichever route you choose. Regards OMS ------------------------- Failure is always an option |

Hi Sanam,
I have just completed the Sustainable Electrical Building Services Engineering MSc at The University of Manchester, which I can throughly recommend. This was undertaken via the distance learning route and has taken me three years to complete. (2 years - 8 modules, 1 year dissertation) You are required to attend the university for examinations and presentations every six months, although there are learning centres around the world depending on where abouts you are. OMS made a very valid point, however in the modern commercial world, building services are a vital component of any building. This degree explores ways of reducing energy consumption in buildings, ie renewables, controls, equipment selection etc. In addition to this, in my case, the IET approved it as an appropriate matching section on top of my first degree, to apply for chartership. If possible, please try and not let money dictate which degree you eventually choose. The degree will open new doors and will be with you for life, even if you are out of pocket in the short term. The course in Manchester is run by Professor Geoff Levermore, who is excellent in my opinion and would be happy to chat with you to discuss your options further. Cheers Mike |

Hello all
I explored distance learning courses earlier this year and had some correspondence with South Bank - their courses are still running as far as I know. The following link is useful http://www.mscbse.co.uk/ My contact at SBU was Pasha Fuad [pasha@lsbu.ac.uk] It sounded useful because the course is very flexible and provides a rounded view on Building Services - electrical, mechanical, energy conservation |

Hi
I can confirm that London South Bank University does offer a distance learning MSc in Building Services Engineering accredited by CIBSE (see: MSc BSE website) and from September 2009 will also offer an MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems by distance learning. i am also looking for a similar course....but it would have been good if the Sustainable Electrical Building Services engineering course at the University of Manchester was offered full time study mode. this course is much better for someone electrical bias....as compared to the university of brunel Msc Building services engineering (only about 20% electrical modules)

i would suggest you that MSc in mechanical engineering is recommended to be done through the distance learning option, as it involves a lot of on site training and lab work. but still if taking up an online degree is the only feasible option for you than you can get one from an accredited online engineering school.
