Looking for information on past members?

Are you interested in someone who used to be a member of the IET? Maybe you’ve been doing some family history research and found an MIEE in your family tree. We can help you find further information.

What do you have?We have records of past members of the IET and its constituent bodies, including:
The IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers)
The IERE (Institution of Radio Engineers)
The IProdE and IMfgE (Institution of Production Engineers, later the Institution of Manufacturing Engineers)
We also have a small amount of information on past members of the IIE (Institution of Incorported Engineers) and other institutions which merged with it (see IIE History for further details). Some information on members of the Women’s Engineering Society  can also be found in the WES collections.

What don’t you have?
We look after the records from 1871 to around 1997: modern records are held by the IET’s Membership Department. We do not have any original membership forms after 1901, but we do have lists. We do not have copies of certificates either: if you want a copy of a certificate you will need to contact City and Guilds.

What other useful information do you have?
If you are interested in how someone became a member, we have records relating to the changing membership requirements of the IET and the examinations held for Associate and Graduate Members. We also have obituaries of past Members: an index
can be found on the Archives website, along with indexes to obituaries of IEE members who died in the First World War. We may also have records relating to the person you are researching in our Archive collections, especially if they were prominent in their field and/or a past President or Honorary Fellow. Try searching the Archives catalogue for more details.

What next?
Look at the information on members on the Archives website. If you have any questions, or would like to order copies of something you have found, please contact us
