I work for a generator hire company, as well as the hire of generators we also hire out cables and distribution equipment,

the 120/240mm cables are all visually inspected prior to going to site and because of there nature should be tested by the installer as part of the installation prior to being signed off

however the smaller 125a - 63a - 32a 16a cables with c-form sockets is a different idea, should we be formally testing and inspecting them annually with a visual inspection prior to each hire, or should we conduct a full test and inspection prior to each hire, given that a temporary installation over 6kw needs to be formally inspected and tested prior to use

I find the best method is to inspect all cables when returned from hire. Damage is then easily charged to the customer if necessary, and stock is immediately available for dispatch. Actual testing is largely a waste of time, if your cables are built properly they will not fail due to loose connection or broken conductors without external damage being visible. Take care that none of the connectors has been removed by the customer, they almost never put them back properly, a drop of paint on the screws is all that is required to ensure they have not been removed. Distribution equipment should have a test of the RCDs and correct operation, do not depend on the end use doing any useful tests.
