Driving safely – are you safe? twelve handy hints

A health and safety briefing provided by the IET.

Most of us think that we are safe drivers but sadly, over three thousand people a year are killed on UK roads and many more are seriously injured.

Though our overall record is better than most other countries, it is a little-known fact that the UK has one of the worst child pedestrian fatality rates in Europe. Driving is the most risky activity that most of us carry out in our daily lives.

A business driver averaging 25,000 miles per year for 40 years runs a risk of about 1 in 200 of being killed and a much higher risk of being involved in a serious accident.

There are a few things that we can all do personally to reduce these risks; these actions may also influence others in our organisations and families to improve their safety.
